Alex Palou secured his first victory of the 2024 season and also took the lead in the points standings. The race took place on a beautiful day, with a strong breeze at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
Christian Lundgaard led the pack in the early stages of the race, but faced constant pressure from Alex Palou throughout the race. However, it was Palou’s perfect pit stop on lap 42 that proved decisive. He came out of the pits in the lead and once he took control, no one could catch him. Palou’s dominance was evident as he easily pulled away from his competitors.
Will Power also made progress during pit stops, overtaking Lundgaard to secure second place. Lundgaard had to settle for the final spot on the podium. Unfortunately for Power, this podium marked another race without a win. His winless streak now extends to almost two years, and he expressed his frustration at repeatedly finishing in second place.
Scott Dixon and Marcus Armstrong rounded out the top five, although they were never in contention for the lead throughout the uneventful race. The most exciting moment of the race came not on lap 85, but on the first turn. Palou nearly collided with Lundgaard while trying to overtake him, but managed to avoid the collision by inches.
Further back in the pack, there were a few collisions that forced six cars to take evasive action and go through the grass. Fortunately, there were no serious incidents, and the only consequences were some broken wings and some avoidable contact penalties handed out by race control.
One of the penalties was given to Marcus Ericsson, who made contact with his teammate Colton Herta and sent him off track. Herta criticized Ericsson’s aggressive move, especially considering Herta’s position as points leader before the race.
Scott McLaughlin also had a challenging race, as he found himself involved in an incident at Turn 1, which dropped him to the back of the pack. However, he managed to gradually recover and finished in sixth place at the end of the race.
Pato O’Ward had a disappointing day due to engine issues. His Chevy engine spectacularly failed during the morning warm-up session, and his team had to quickly replace it before the race. However, the new engine did not perform well, and O’Ward struggled with power throughout the race, finishing in 13th place after starting in fifth.
Surprisingly, Josef Newgarden had a race to forget as he failed to make an impact. Despite starting in fourth position, he gradually dropped down the rankings and ended up finishing in 18th place. This disappointing result comes after his Indy 500 victory was nullified due to a Team Penske Push to Pass violation. Newgarden currently sits in 17th place in the points standings as he prepares to defend his previous win.
There was only one yellow flag during the race, caused by Luca Ghiotto spinning off into the grass and needing assistance to restart his car. By the time the yellow flag was deployed, all pit stop strategies had already been executed, and all drivers had completed their third and final pit stops.
Santino Ferrucci was the only driver to retire from the race due to reported brake distribution issues. His Chevrolet AJ Foyt was forced to retire on lap 55. Drivers and teams now have a short three-day break before diving straight into practice sessions for the Indy 500 on the 2.5-mile oval track on Tuesday morning.
