Sergio Pérez is in his final year of contract with Red Bull in Formula 1, with his continuity uncertain. There are other desirable drivers available, like Carlos Sainz, and the Mexican continues under a lot of pressure to deliver results.
So far he has not finished outside the top five, has four podiums in six races, and is second in the championship only behind his teammate – the dominant Max Verstappen, who has four wins in six possible races.
In a press conference, Pérez was asked about his future, responding that, at this time, it is not his priority: ‘I think that, like everyone who hasn’t signed a contract, until you have the paper fully signed, everything remains as an option. Right now it’s not really the main priority’.
That said, #11 acknowledged that Lewis Hamilton’s confirmation at Ferrari in January accelerates the driver market process: ‘It’s obvious that the driver market is making things happen much earlier with Lewis joining Ferrari at the beginning of the year. That made everyone look for the best possible option they can get’.
Regarding his situation, Pérez believes that the contract will be signed sooner rather than later: ‘I believe it’s just a matter of time and obviously the priority now is on the season, on the races, it’s preparing the races with the team. And the rest will take care of itself’.
