Coulthard: Things don’t last forever, Newey could go to Ferrari in my opinion.

Coulthard: As coisas não duram para sempre, Newey poderia ir para a Ferrari na minha opinião.

MIAMI, FLORIDA - MAY 03: Adrian Newey, the Chief Technical Officer of Oracle Red Bull Racing, Oracle Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner and David Coulthard talk in the Paddock prior to practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Miami at Miami International Autodrome on May 03, 2024 in Miami, Florida. In the world of tabloids, the story goes that it was Coulthard who introduced Newey to Christian Horner, forming the powerful trio depicted above in the Red Bull pit garage in Miami. Coulthard had the privilege of driving Adrian’s cars both at Williams and McLaren, creating a lasting bond and mutual respect between the two.

The Miami GP was the place to be last weekend, with VIPs, former drivers, current drivers, and many flashy people. As I casually walked through the F1 paddock at the Hard Rock Stadium, I ended up meeting DC, who kindly shared his thoughts on the hottest topic in F1: What does the future hold for Adrian Newey?

Coulthard dared to say: “First and foremost, nothing lasts forever. Adrian has been with the team for almost 18 incredible years, achieving tremendous success. However, at 65, he has decided he needs to redirect his energy to other ventures. Nevertheless, he will always be a good friend. It will be intriguing to see if he takes a little break or joins another team. Many people believe and hope he ends up at Ferrari, which, in my opinion, would be the perfect way to cap off his extraordinary career.”

Although Williams made a weak offer to Newey, the smart money is on him joining Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in Maranello as early as next year. According to the Italian media, rumors are circulating that the Ferrari boss traveled to London earlier this month to finalize a deal, which is expected to be officially announced “the week following the Miami GP.”

When asked if he provided Vasseur with Newey’s contact information, as he did with Horner almost two decades ago, Coulthard replied: “Everyone knows how to get in touch with Adrian. However, at that time, Christian did not have the same personal connection with Adrian that I did. Naturally, I was more than happy to help in any way I could.”

McLaren boss Zak Brown predicted that Newey’s departure is just the beginning of the changes happening at Red Bull following the scandal involving Horner’s inappropriate messages. This incident caused a lot of chaos within the team early in the season. Now, the question arises: Will Max Verstappen be the next to leave the team that made him a Formula 1 world champion?

In response to this speculation, Coulthard stated that Verstappen has a contract with the team and there is no reason for him to seek opportunities elsewhere. Typically, drivers do not leave winning situations; they only leave when they feel they are not being given a chance to succeed.

An example of a driver leaving a successful team is Lewis Hamilton’s decision to move from Mercedes to Ferrari. Hamilton believes that this change presents a better opportunity for him to win his eighth Formula 1 world title. Despite winning all seven of his titles with Mercedes, Hamilton has not won a Grand Prix since 2021.

Before Coulthard focuses on his own activities in the sunny city of Miami, he was asked about the progress of his son Duncan. This question brought a huge smile to Coulthard’s face as he revealed that his son will be competing in Formula 4 next year. It seems that the Coulthard family is fully supporting Duncan’s racing career.

When asked if he will support his son, Coulthard responded positively, stating that he will support him as long as Duncan remains committed. Although Coulthard believes his son has talent, he acknowledges that ultimately, performance on the race track is what really matters.

Coulthard had a successful career in F1 from 1994 to 1998, making 26 starts in Grand Prix races. He stood on the podium 62 times, with 13 of those being victories. During his time at McLaren, he played a key role in helping the team win the F1 Constructors’ Championship, especially alongside his teammate Mika Hakkinen.
