The possibility of Williams replacing Logan Sargeant with Mercedes protege Kimi Antonelli in the 2024 Formula 1 season emerges as a credible prospect, although it is not expected to happen soon. Antonelli, the current European Formula Regional champion, skipped Formula 3 and entered Formula 2 at the age of 17. Initially considered for a spot at Mercedes F1 in 2025, he is now linked to an early entry into F1. On the other hand, Sargeant has had a challenging start to his F1 career and has struggled to keep up with his teammate Alex Albon. Williams has expressed support for Sargeant but is evaluating the possibility of replacing him to enhance the team’s long-term competitiveness. Although Williams has other junior drivers in its academy, the option of loaning Antonelli from Mercedes has been considered. Antonelli is a potential candidate for an F1 seat with Mercedes next year, depending on various factors such as the future of Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz, as well as his performance in the F2 season and F1 tests with Mercedes. Antonelli is currently not eligible for a super license due to his age, but an exception has been requested. Mercedes is willing to respect the age limit and wait until Antonelli turns 18. Williams team principal James Vowles has not ruled out the possibility of hiring Antonelli but indicated that the team’s main focus is on improving the car and determining their driver plans for the future. Vowles emphasized that Sargeant needs to earn his seat and there are no immediate plans to replace him. Regardless, if a switch to Antonelli were to occur, Mercedes would need to agree to it and decide the best development path for him. The team may consider a short-term stint at Williams before a full-time seat at Mercedes in the future. However, this could disrupt Antonelli’s progress in F2 and his F1 testing program. Alternatively, a more mutually beneficial arrangement could be if Mercedes were to sign Sainz or Verstappen and Antonelli had a multi-year stint at Williams. Mercedes is comfortable with waiting, as Antonelli’s youth and lack of experience make him a good candidate for ongoing development in F2 and testing with old Mercedes cars in F1. Despite speculation about Antonelli’s performance in his F1 tests, Mercedes is pleased with his conduct. Considering Mercedes’s willingness to wait, the uncertainty surrounding Antonelli’s medium-term plans, and Vowles’s comments on Sargeant, even if a mid-season switch were to occur, it is more likely to happen in months, rather than weeks.
