Farfus lidera corrida LMGT3 em Imola pela equipe WRT.

Augusto Farfus secured a dominant victory for WRT team in the LMGT3 class at the 2024 Imola 6 Hours, the second round of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship. The race was heavily affected by rain, but Farfus made a well-calculated bet on tires to stay ahead of the competition. Maxime Martin in BMW #46 fought hard for the win but ended up losing due to a penalty at the end of the race. Despite the challenging conditions, Farfus and BMW M4 GT3 #31 crossed the finish line in first place, with Martin and BMW #46 in second. It was a successful outing for the two WRT cars, securing a first and second place in the LMGT3 class.

The race started chaotic, with incidents and contacts between several cars. Alex Malykhin in Porsche #92 took the lead early on, while Sarah Bovy in Lamborghini #85 and Yasser Shahin in Porsche #91 had a collision further back. Shahin ended up in the barriers but managed to limp back to the pits for repairs. However, the stewards issued a penalty to car #91, further complicating their race. Lamborghini #85 also faced electronic issues and eventually retired after several visits to the pits.

As the race progressed, Malykhin maintained a comfortable lead, with Amhad Al Harthy in BMW #46 and Darren Leung in BMW #31 chasing behind. Joel Strum in Porsche #92 defended his position against Francois Heriau in Ferrari #55, who had climbed into the battle for the win. Valentino Rossi in BMW #46 battled with Daniel Mancinelli in Aston Martin #27 and Sean Gelael in BMW #31.

At the third hour, Mancinelli received a penalty for not respecting the full yellow flag procedures, effectively taking the Aston Martin #27 out of contention for the win. Rossi, with an advantage on tires, pressured Heriau for second place, but was eventually overtaken by Simon Mann in the AF Corse Ferrari. Strum continued to control the race up front, with Martin in the BMW #46 and Farfus in the BMW #31 close behind.

However, the race changed when the rain started to fall. With the end of the fourth hour under a Safety Car, most LMGT3 cars decided to stay on slick tires, including the leading Porsche #92. The TF Sport Corvettes, on the other hand, switched to rain tires. Manthey’s gamble to put car #92 on rain tires did not pay off, and they eventually switched back to slicks. This allowed the WRT cars to fight for the lead, and Farfus took advantage of a small mistake by Martin to take the lead.

Despite a drive-through penalty for Martin for not respecting a Virtual Safety Car, the BMW #46 managed to hold onto second place thanks to Manthey’s failed tire strategy. The BMW #31 ran unopposed in the final hour, securing a comfortable victory. Martin’s second place also marked the first FIA WEC podium for former MotoGP star Valentino Rossi. Behind them, Bachler in the Porsche #92 finished third, followed by the Ferrari #55 and the Aston Martin #27.

United Autosports had a promising result, finishing sixth with their McLaren 720S LMGT3 Evo #95. The TF Sport Corvettes finished seventh and eighth, with car #81 ahead of car #82. The Proton Competition Ford Mustang LMGT3 #77 claimed ninth place, while sister car #88 was forced to retire due to multiple damages. The D’Station Racing Aston Martin #777 completed the top ten in the LMGT3 class.
