Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR) is making waves in the motorsport world by announcing the highly anticipated addition of Hunter McElrea as their official reserve driver for the upcoming 2026 NTT IndyCar Series season. This strategic move not only highlights McElrea’s impressive talent but also signals ECR's commitment to maintaining a competitive edge on the track.

At just 26 years old, McElrea is set to travel alongside the team, ready to step in at a moment's notice should the full-time drivers, Alexander Rossi or Christian Rasmussen, be unable to compete. This role is pivotal, ensuring that ECR maintains peak performance throughout the season. In addition to being the backup driver, McElrea will play a crucial part in the team’s testing and simulator work, working tirelessly to refine setups and optimize performance as the racing season unfolds.

Hunter McElrea’s journey to this moment has been nothing short of remarkable. After dominating the IndyNXT Series in 2022 and 2023 with four victories and a runner-up finish in the 2023 championship, he has transitioned into the challenging world of IMSA racing. Notably, he also made his IndyCar debut with Dale Coyne Racing in Toronto back in 2024, showcasing his versatility and determination.

Expressing his excitement about joining ECR, McElrea stated, “I am really excited to join ECR as a reserve driver. The team has great momentum and I’m looking forward to being part of it. The NTT IndyCar Series has always been my goal, so I’m thankful for the opportunity and ready to support ECR however I can!” His enthusiasm reflects not only his personal ambition but also the promising future he sees with the team.

McElrea’s connection to the IndyCar paddock has remained strong since his IndyNXT days, and this position represents a significant step in advancing his career. His prowess extends beyond IndyCar; he has excelled in LMP2 racing, recently clinching multiple victories, including a class win at the prestigious Sebring 12 Hours just last week. This versatility proves that McElrea is not only a driver but a formidable competitor across different racing platforms.

Tim Broyles, team president of ECR, emphasized the importance of having a reliable reserve driver: “Having a reserve driver in place is an important step in maintaining the level of performance required in this series. Hunter has done a great job when we have had him in the car for testing. He has a really strong feel for the car and is able to provide detailed feedback that helps move the entire team forward. While you never want to be in a position where you need to call on a reserve driver, we’re confident Hunter would step in and rise to the occasion.”

As the 2026 season approaches, all eyes will undoubtedly be on Hunter McElrea. With his proven track record and undeniable passion for racing, he is poised to make an impact at ECR. Fans and industry insiders alike are eager to see how this new chapter unfolds for both McElrea and Ed Carpenter Racing in the high-octane world of IndyCar racing. Buckle up; this is just the beginning!
