Lando Norris Declares McLaren Will Dominate F1 with 'Best Car' Despite Rocky Start
In a bold proclamation that has fans buzzing, reigning world champion Lando Norris is convinced that McLaren will rise to the top of the Formula 1 hierarchy by the end of the season. This optimism comes in the wake of a rocky start as the team gears up for the crucial Japanese Grand Prix, following a series of setbacks that have left them trailing behind arch-rivals Mercedes and Ferrari.
Norris faced a disheartening DNS (Did Not Start) in the Chinese Grand Prix due to an electrical failure in the power unit and only managed a fifth-place finish in the season opener in Australia. With a staggering 36-point gap separating him from championship leader George Russell, and McLaren lagging a hefty 80 points behind Mercedes in the Constructors' Championship, the pressure is mounting.
Reflecting on McLaren’s historical comeback in 2024, Norris reminded us, “I can't remember how many points we were behind in 2024 from Mercedes and Red Bull, but I think we were over 150 points behind and we still managed to come back and win the Constructors.” His relentless ambition shines through as he states, “What we are thinking of is getting on the podium first of all, and then just returning to winning races. The points then take care of themselves and we'll see what we can claw back. But we're confident in that.”
Norris is not shy about his belief in the team’s capabilities, asserting, “I think we're confident as a team and we believe in ourselves that we've won the last two championships… I’m confident we can get back to doing that this year.” He emphasizes the importance of patience in the development process, hinting that the team has significant upgrades in the pipeline, though he acknowledges, “it will take time.”
While details surrounding his recent power unit failure remain murky, Norris assured fans that the team, in collaboration with engine supplier Mercedes, has identified the issue to prevent future mishaps. The upcoming season is pivotal, especially with the introduction of new 2026 F1 cars, and McLaren has demonstrated a knack for delivering performance-enhancing upgrades without compromising reliability.
Yet, it’s not just Norris feeling the heat. Teammate Oscar Piastri has faced an even tougher 2026 season start, having not completed a single lap in a Grand Prix due to a crash in Australia and a separate power unit failure in China. With McLaren and Red Bull once titans of speed, they now find themselves overtaken by Mercedes and Ferrari in this new era of racing.
Piastri, however, remains optimistic about McLaren’s trajectory. “It's a very different set of rules,” he said, indicating that the team is focused on closing the gap in engine performance. “That's where a lot of lap time is generated, especially in qualifying… We haven’t sacrificed this year by trying to win the championship last year,” he added, reinforcing that their previous success does not hinder their current progress.
As the iconic Suzuka Circuit prepares to host the Japanese Grand Prix, all eyes will be on McLaren. With Norris's unwavering confidence and Piastri's determination, the team aims to prove that they are not just a fading memory of past glories but a resurgent force ready to reclaim their place at the pinnacle of Formula 1. The stage is set for an electrifying weekend, and fans eagerly await to see if McLaren can turn their aspirations into reality.
