Toto Wolff slams ‘stupid’ Max Verstappen to Mercedes rumors amid explosive F1 2026 start

Toto Wolff Hits Back at ‘Absurd’ Max Verstappen to Mercedes Rumors Amidst F1 Turmoil

In a fiery response that has sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 community, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has firmly quashed speculation linking Max Verstappen to a possible move to the Silver Arrows, deeming the rumors “stupid.” Wolff’s comments come amidst a backdrop of intense competition and shifting dynamics within the F1 landscape, where Verstappen's future at Red Bull is once again under scrutiny.

The whispers of Verstappen swapping his Red Bull seat for a coveted position at Mercedes have lingered for years, but the chatter has reached a fever pitch in recent weeks. Wolff, however, asserts that he is more than satisfied with his current driver lineup, which boasts two formidable talents: Lewis Hamilton—who has recently left the team—and the rising star, George Russell, who currently sits atop the Drivers’ Championship standings.

The situation escalated dramatically with the controversial ousting of former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, a moment that raised eyebrows and prompted Verstappen’s father, Jos, to ominously state that the team could “explode” under new leadership. Against this tumultuous backdrop, Wolff’s interest in Verstappen became a hot topic, particularly after Hamilton’s departure from the team.

Despite Verstappen clinching the F1 2024 title, Red Bull’s once-indomitable dominance has begun to wane. The team found itself eclipsed by rivals McLaren, Ferrari, and, yes, even Mercedes, which has left fans and analysts questioning the stability of Verstappen's position within Red Bull. The 2026 season has been particularly rough on the Dutch driver, who has only managed to scrape together a mere eight points over the first two race weekends, leaving him trailing 43 points behind championship leader George Russell.

After a disheartening day at the Chinese Grand Prix, where Verstappen exited with zero points, he expressed his frustration candidly: “Not at the moment… It’s really not where we want to be. I know everyone is, of course, trying their best, and I think they are as frustrated with it as I am within the team.” This sentiment has led to mounting speculation that Verstappen may soon seek greener pastures—potentially at Mercedes, where Wolff has crafted a championship-caliber team.

However, former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer has weighed in with a stark warning: “The conversation is going to happen. Max is not here to finish eighth in qualifying. He’s not here to not even fight for a podium. He’s going to be looking at a way to get into that Mercedes, because they have the best car.” Yet, Wolff remains unfazed by the notion of adding Verstappen to his roster, stating, “I couldn’t be happier and happier with the two of them,” referring to Russell and Kimi Antonelli, who have both signed long-term contracts.

In a candid interview with OE24, Wolff emphasized the absurdity of the rumors circulating so early in the season. “The amazing thing is that these stupid rumors are already coming up in March. Stupid enough that you usually talk about it in July. I don’t know who brought it up again,” he declared, further solidifying his stance on the matter.

With contracts in place for both of his current drivers and a clear vision for the future, Wolff’s dismissal of the Verstappen rumors underscores his commitment to maintaining a winning lineup. As the F1 season heats up, all eyes will be on Verstappen and Red Bull to see if they can reclaim their former glory—or whether the whispers of a Mercedes move will gain any traction.

Stay tuned, as the drama unfolds in the high-speed world of Formula 1, where every twist and turn could lead to game-changing decisions that redefine the sport.
