After the recent news about its potential entry into Formula 1 with its own team, BYD returns to the spotlight with two possibilities that highlight its current impressive growth and global expansion dynamics. According to news reported by Bloomberg, the Chinese brand may be considering the construction of a car factory in Canada, a possibility that arises following negotiations between the two countries, which also led to a tariff exemption for a limited number of electric vehicles imported from China.
The Canadian government will obviously prefer the establishment of a joint venture between the Chinese manufacturer and a local partner, but for Stella Li, Vice President of BYD, that “possibility may not be viable”, since the manufacturer will prefer to take full responsibility for the project. On the other hand, the Chinese giant is also considering the acquisition of an already established Western manufacturer, just as its compatriot Geely did with Volvo and Lotus, for example, potentially taking advantage of the accumulated experience and the difficulties faced by American and European manufacturers, but also Japanese ones.
“We are open to all opportunities that arise. Although there is currently no business underway, the company is evaluating possible assets. We will see what is most advantageous for us”, commented Stella Li. If the various possibilities are confirmed, BYD may end up with a new factory in North America, taking control of an already established manufacturer, and also competing in the most demanding discipline of motorsport. The future will tell.
