Opel Joins the Electric Revolution: A Game-Changer for Formula E!

In a shocking and electrifying development, German automotive giant Opel has officially declared its entry into the high-octane world of Formula E, setting the stage for a groundbreaking new chapter in all-electric racing! As the much-anticipated Gen4 era looms, the newly minted Opel GSE Formula E Team is gearing up for a thrilling four-year contract that promises to shake things up on the track.

This revelation comes just days before the inaugural Madrid E-Prix, a race that signifies the dawn of a new era in electric motorsport. Notably, this announcement follows the exit of DS Automobiles, another Stellantis-owned brand, from the championship at the end of the season. Opel’s fresh entry will ramp up the competition, bringing the total number of teams to 12 and cars to 24 for the 2026/27 campaign!

Opel is clearly committed to a greener future, as evidenced by its dedicated push through the Grand Sport Electric (GSE) sub-brand. The company’s CEO, Florian Huettl, heralded this move as a “new milestone” in Opel’s electrification journey, stating, “Joining Formula E marks a new milestone for Opel on our journey towards an electric future.” With the introduction of Gen4 cars, the timing couldn't be more perfect for Opel to establish itself in this exhilarating arena.

Huettl emphasized the brand’s heritage of “German engineering, bold design, and electrified performance” that will be on full display through Opel's fully-electric GSE models, including the much-lauded Mokka GSE and the soon-to-be-released Corsa GSE. The team will be led by the dynamic Jörg Schrott, who doubles as the Director of Opel Motorsport. Schrott is already rallying a talented crew of engineers, strategists, and operational experts to ensure that the Opel GSE Formula E Team hits the ground running.

This leap into Formula E arrives five years after Opel launched the ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup, marking a significant evolution in the company’s racing ambitions. Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are delighted to welcome Opel as a new factory team in Formula E. As a strong German brand with distinctive engineering expertise and a fresh, bold image, Opel brings a long and storied history in motorsport and a new dynamic to the starting grid.”

Opel’s commitment to Formula E underscores the growing significance of electric mobility in the automotive industry, as global manufacturers race to transition towards a greener future. With this powerhouse brand now entering the fray, the upcoming seasons promise to deliver fierce competition, cutting-edge technology, and a thrilling spectacle for fans around the world!

As the engines rev up and the excitement builds, all eyes will be on Opel and its innovative approach to electric racing. Will they emerge as a formidable force in this electrifying sport? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the future of racing is electric, and Opel is ready to take the lead!
