Aston Martin faces potential takeover as BYD eyes entry into F1: a game-changing shift?

Aston Martin F1 Under Siege: A New Team on the Horizon?

In a shocking twist that could reshape the landscape of Formula 1, whispers of a potential takeover of Aston Martin have surfaced, igniting speculation about the future of the iconic racing team. The British automaker, which has long been a staple at the Silverstone circuit, finds itself in a precarious position, battling not only the competition but also chronic issues with its performance. As rumors swirl, one powerful contender has emerged: Chinese automotive giant BYD.

Aston Martin's grand ambitions to ascend the rankings in the new F1 era, fueled by a promising partnership with Honda, seem to be fading fast. The reality, however, is starkly different. The team is languishing at the back of the grid, grappling with significant technical difficulties, including debilitating vibrations caused by their Honda power unit. This disturbing issue has left star drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll unable to endure a full race distance without suffering intense discomfort. In fact, Alonso himself has reported losing feeling in his hands, a situation so dire that it forced him to retire mid-race during the Chinese Grand Prix.

The timing of these woes could not be worse. Amidst the turmoil, reports from the German publication Auto Motor und Sport suggest that BYD is exploring the possibility of entering the F1 arena, potentially by acquiring Aston Martin. The company, which sold a staggering 4.6 million vehicles in 2025, is eager to claim a stake in the motorsport world, eyeing the twelfth spot on the grid as a strategic move to bolster its brand visibility and consumer interest.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has reportedly thrown his support behind the idea of a Chinese manufacturer joining the F1 ranks, adding further fuel to the fire. However, the path to a successful entry into the sport is riddled with challenges, as Cadillac has recently learned through its own struggles in establishing a competitive team from scratch.

Given this backdrop, Auto Motor und Sport posits that BYD sees an opportunity in acquiring an existing team rather than starting anew. Among the frontrunners for a potential takeover are Alpine and, notably, Aston Martin. The publication notes, “Aston Martin remains the second takeover target. After the debacle during testing and in Melbourne, owner Lawrence Stroll could soon reach his breaking point.”

Yet, the prospect of a takeover may not be as straightforward as it seems. The publication cautions that such a move could be “unrealistic,” given Stroll's substantial financial commitment to the Aston Martin project and the ongoing partnership with Honda. Indeed, despite the team's current struggles, there is speculation that Honda is unlikely to sever ties so quickly, especially as they venture into the first year of their collaboration. Intriguingly, AMuS even suggests that Honda could potentially take control of the Aston Martin team in the future, reminiscent of their previous acquisition of BAR in 2005.

As the drama unfolds, the F1 world watches with bated breath. Will Aston Martin withstand the pressure, or is a seismic shift on the horizon that could see a new face in the paddock? One thing is for certain: in the cutthroat realm of Formula 1, nothing is ever guaranteed, and the stakes have never been higher.
