Impact of the news of Sainz/Lawson on Red Bull seats in Formula 1 in 2025.

Impacto das notícias de Sainz/Lawson nos assentos da Red Bull na Fórmula 1 em 2025.

Red Bull is currently in negotiations with Carlos Sainz, who is leaving Ferrari, about the possibility of securing a spot in Formula 1 for the 2025 season. The line-ups of Red Bull’s two F1 teams have been the subject of much speculation, including the future of Max Verstappen at Red Bull Racing being questioned. However, the biggest unknowns are who will be Verstappen’s teammate in 2025 and who will drive for Red Bull’s second team. Sergio Perez, the current Red Bull Racing driver, has made a strong case to be retained, but other contracted drivers like Daniel Ricciardo, Yuki Tsunoda, and Liam Lawson are also contenders for the position.

Ricciardo’s disappointing performance against Tsunoda has shifted the focus on whether Ricciardo will keep his current position, let alone challenge Perez. It was previously hinted that former Red Bull junior driver Sainz was being considered, but he currently has a lucrative offer from Audi that Red Bull cannot match. Sainz has proven to be a race winner at Ferrari and performed well against his teammate Charles Leclerc. He also had a positive comparison with Verstappen when they were teammates at Toro Rosso in 2015. Although there were tensions at Toro Rosso, they were more related to Verstappen’s father and Carlos Sainz Sr. than the drivers themselves.

There are speculations that Sainz may join Mercedes and swap places with Lewis Hamilton, but that is far from the truth. Sainz is looking for a long-term option, which Mercedes cannot offer due to their prodigy Kimi Antonelli already racing in Formula 2 and being their preferred choice for their 2025 seat. Red Bull may also not be able to provide the kind of security Sainz desires. Audi, despite struggling in the midfield, is widely considered Sainz’s likely destination. However, Sainz insists that all seats are viable options and he is optimistic about his future.

While Red Bull considers recruiting Sainz, they also have to take into account Perez’s good performance this season. Marko believes Perez is the best option for the 2025 season if he continues to perform well. Long-term, Red Bull is interested in McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, but both are under contract until at least the end of 2026. Red Bull’s priority should be to develop their own talent to fill their teams in the future, and finding a full-time spot in F1 for Lawson would help alleviate the short-term problem. Marko confirmed that Red Bull has promised Lawson a spot in the 2025 race after he served as a reserve driver this year.

Lawson had a good performance as a substitute for Ricciardo in five races last season, but Red Bull ended up keeping Ricciardo and Tsunoda in the second team. Marko is a fan of Lawson and wants to find a place for him as soon as possible. However, he stated that Ricciardo needs to be clearly faster than Tsunoda to have a chance at a place in Red Bull. There may be a change during the season, as happened last year, but it is a complex topic that requires further evaluation. It has been believed since last year that Lawson accepted the role of reserve driver with the condition of getting a spot in the race in 2025. This means that Red Bull may have to give up at least one of its current drivers in the future, whether this year or for the 2025 season.
