Fernando Alonso slams F1’s new rules: ‘If you like this, you don’t know real racing’

Fernando Alonso Unleashes Fury on Formula 1's New Rules: “If You Enjoy This, You Don't Know Real Racing!”

In a stunning display of frustration, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has lashed out at the recently introduced regulations in Formula 1 for 2026, as he grapples with a nightmarish start to the season with Aston Martin. The Spanish driver’s discontent reached a boiling point following yet another disappointing outing at the Chinese Grand Prix, where insufferable vibrations from the AMR26 forced him to retire from the race.

Alonso’s early season has been marred by a string of challenges, marked by unyielding reliability issues and a noticeable lack of competitiveness. The chaos on the track has left fans and analysts alike questioning the viability of Aston Martin's performance under the new technical regulations.

“The vibrations worsened throughout the weekend, making it impossible to stay on track,” Alonso lamented. “Continuing to race without feeling my hands and feet made no sense. We were already a lap down, in last place, so there was no reason to keep going.” His words echo the sentiment of a driver who is clearly at his wit's end.

In a scathing critique of the sport’s evolution, Alonso dubbed the current state of Formula 1 a “battery championship,” emphasizing the sport's increasing reliance on electric power units that now dominate the performance metrics of the cars. “It’s terrible,” he declared to the media after the race. “If someone enjoys this, they clearly don’t understand what real racing is all about. It’s not fun! It’s like playing Mario Kart. You accelerate, you overtake, then run out of battery, and before you know it, someone zooms past you on the next straight. To me, this is a joke.”

With only two races completed in the 2026 season, Alonso has yet to finish a single Grand Prix, a stark reflection of Aston Martin's struggles to adapt to the new regulatory landscape. This alarming trend raises significant concerns within the team, which is urgently seeking solutions to enhance the car’s reliability and boost its competitiveness in the upcoming races.

As the tension mounts, Alonso's candid and fiery remarks serve as a clarion call for change in Formula 1. The legendary driver’s frustration is a powerful reminder that the essence of racing should never be lost in a sea of regulations and technology. The world is watching—will the sport heed this warning before it’s too late?
