Max Verstappen brands F1 racing ‘a joke’: brutal critique of new regulations revealed

Max Verstappen Slams F1's New Era: “It's Just a Joke!”

In a scathing outburst that’s sending shockwaves through the Formula 1 community, four-time world champion Max Verstappen has pulled no punches in his critique of the current state of racing. The Dutch driver has labeled the new regulations of F1 as “a joke,” expressing his deep dissatisfaction with the sport's direction ahead of the much-anticipated 2026 rules overhaul.

Verstappen's frustrations erupted following a dismal performance at the Chinese Grand Prix, where he admitted he hasn’t enjoyed the racing experience since the very first lap of the season. Despite Red Bull Racing appearing strong during pre-season testing, the reality on the track has been far less glamorous. The integration of a new power unit in collaboration with Ford has proven to be a slow burn, and the RB22 car has thrown multiple challenges at the team.

After a rocky start that saw him crash out in Q1 during the Australian Grand Prix, Verstappen managed to claw his way to a sixth-place finish. However, his apparent prowess was nowhere to be found at the Shanghai International Circuit. The reigning champion faced a double whammy of poor starts, falling back in the ranks after qualifying in the top 10. In a disappointing turn of events, a coolant leak ultimately forced Red Bull to retire him from the race entirely, leaving him with zero points for the weekend.

Reflecting on his tumultuous race in Shanghai, Verstappen lamented, “We were slower this weekend, so we were fighting Haas and Alpine the whole race. Of course, some other cars, yes…” His frustration was palpable as he described the current racing dynamics under the new rules, which have transformed wheel-to-wheel combat into a frustrating cycle of energy management. “I mean, look at the racing. We are boosting past, then you run out of battery. The next straight, they boost past you again,” he critiqued. “For me, it's just a joke.”

As Verstappen's comments reverberate through the paddock, one thing is clear: the future of F1 hangs in the balance. Will the sport’s governing bodies heed the warning from one of its brightest stars, or will they continue down a path that has left fans and drivers alike disillusioned? As the grid prepares for the next race, all eyes will be on Verstappen to see if he can turn around his fortunes or if the “joke” of F1 continues to play out on the track.
