Lando Norris reveals painful truth about McLaren’s struggles in 2026: a team under pressure

Lando Norris Blasts McLaren: “We Haven't Done Enough” as Team Crumbles in 2026 Season Opener!

In a shocking admission that raises serious questions about McLaren’s capabilities in the 2026 Formula 1 season, reigning champion Lando Norris has boldly stated that his team “hasn’t done enough” to keep up with the competition. The once-dominant papaya squad crumbled under pressure, finishing a staggering 51 seconds behind George Russell, who secured victory at the Australian Grand Prix.

The Melbourne weekend kicked off disastrously for Norris, who was forced to retire during FP1 due to catastrophic gearbox issues. This dismal start has left McLaren fans reeling, as the team that soared to the top of the 2025 season now finds itself at a crossroads, desperately needing to regain its footing.

Competing against three other teams powered by Mercedes engines in 2026, McLaren’s performance has been anything but competitive. As Mercedes celebrated a commanding one-two finish with Russell and teammate Kimi Antonelli, McLaren’s team principal Andrea Stella candidly acknowledged that they are “on the back foot” in understanding their new power unit.

Norris further amplified Stella's sentiments in an interview, asserting that the team is grappling with both the power unit and chassis issues. “It’s both,” he stated emphatically when questioned about the performance deficit. “We haven’t done as good of a job as we should have done. The chassis is not to the level we want it to be at. It’s certainly not bad, but we need to improve it more. We know where we’re stronger, where we’re weaker.”

The 23-year-old champion didn’t mince words when critiquing the team’s performance, stressing that improvements are critical. “There are some things we need more of from a software point of view, but at the same time, there’s plenty of things we didn’t do good enough as a team. We have no one to blame for that. It’s just that we could have done better, we should have done better.”

The grim situation escalated at the Chinese Grand Prix, where neither Norris nor teammate Oscar Piastri even made it to the start line. Norris was left stranded in the pits due to electrical issues, while Piastri faced his own catastrophic misfortune, wheeled back into the garage just minutes before the race began. With both drivers out of contention, Piastri has yet to complete a single lap in the 2026 season after crashing before the race even started in Melbourne.

As the McLaren team grapples with this disastrous turn of events, they now face a week of reflection and regrouping before heading to Suzuka for the next race on March 19. The upcoming event promises to be a crucial turning point as the team desperately tries to claw back some semblance of form in a season that has begun with chaos and calamity.

With the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix both canceled due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, McLaren must seize this rare opportunity to recalibrate and strategize. Will they rise from the ashes or continue to spiral into obscurity? Only time will tell as the once-mighty McLaren seeks to salvage its pride and performance in this tumultuous season.
