Takamoto Katsuta Dominates Safari Rally Kenya as Final Stage is Abruptly Cancelled!

In a dramatic turn of events at the Safari Rally Kenya, Takamoto Katsuta has surged ahead with an astonishing lead of over a minute, setting the stage for what could be his first-ever World Rally Championship victory. The rally's brutal Saturday saw the final stage scrapped, leaving Katsuta basking in the glow of his hard-fought triumph amid treacherous conditions that had even the most seasoned drivers on edge.

Katsuta, driving for Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, emerged from the toughest day of the season thus far with a formidable 1 minute and 25.5 seconds advantage over Adrien Fourmaux from Hyundai. This leap into the lead was fueled by a morning filled with chaos, as his Toyota teammates, including stars like Oliver Solberg, Sébastien Ogier, Elfyn Evans, and Sami Pajari, faced disastrous setbacks that paved the way for Katsuta's ascendance.

Starting the day in seventh place, Katsuta quickly showcased his skill, moving up to fifth after Pajari's right rear tire exploded during stage 12. The day was marred by intense frustration among the drivers, including Katsuta, who were outraged by the organizers' changes designed to deter corner-cutting. The result? Multiple punctures, including double punctures for Katsuta, Evans, Solberg, and Pajari. With no spare wheels to rely on, Katsuta had to play it safe in stage 13 but climbed to third place when Fourmaux struggled with an overheating i20 N after also suffering a puncture.

That wasn’t all—Evans' day took a turn for the worse when his GR Yaris' right rear suspension collapsed, an incident triggered by a rock impact that had already caused him issues earlier. By the time Katsuta reached the midday service, he found himself at the top of the leaderboard as both Solberg and Ogier were forced to retire. Solberg was crippled by a broken alternator and clutch failure, while Ogier's issues stemmed from a faulty alternator, likely compromised by the relentless mud.

With a comfortable 1 minute and 7.5 seconds lead over Thierry Neuville in the afternoon loop, Katsuta seemed poised for a dominant finish. However, Neuville's hopes evaporated in stage 14 as he battled through a double puncture only to be ultimately sidelined by a catastrophic driveshaft failure. “It was a sequence of problems aligning through the stage,” Neuville lamented. “I felt that something wasn't 100% right on the car, and then it was finished.”

As the dust settled, Katsuta found himself with Fourmaux in hot pursuit, but the latter's efforts to close the gap fizzled out in stage 15, where he lost valuable time. “I really was looking after the car. It is quite a lot if I want to push [to catch Taka],” Fourmaux admitted, underscoring the tension in the competition.

The action came to an unexpected halt when organizers made the bold decision to cancel stage 16 due to an afternoon rain shower that rendered the roads impassable for rescue vehicles. “Honestly, it's much easier when you are fighting flat out everywhere. It's very stressful; I am just trying to avoid every single rock, even the very small ones,” Katsuta expressed, reflecting the intensity of the race.

In the final stages of the day, Pajari managed to claim what would turn out to be the last stage victory, propelling himself into third place with a time that left many in awe. Meanwhile, Esapekka Lappi focused on mere survival, stating, “I just try to finish; it doesn't make any sense to me to fight.”

With Robert Virves leading the WRC2 class and the M-Sport Ford team nursing their wounded vehicles to the finish, the rally is far from over. Four more stages await the drivers on Sunday, and all eyes will be on Katsuta as he aims to secure a historic victory in this year's Safari Rally Kenya! Buckle up, folks—this race is heating up like never before!
