Lewis Hamilton’s explosive engine claim at Chinese GP: is Mercedes hiding unmatched power?

Lewis Hamilton Drops Bombshell on Mercedes Engine Power as Kimi Antonelli and George Russell Dominate Chinese GP Qualifying

In a jaw-dropping revelation at the Chinese Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton has hinted that Mercedes may be concealing extra engine power during qualifying sessions, a tactic that could change the landscape of Formula 1 racing. As the Silver Arrows secured the front row in Shanghai, Hamilton, a veteran of the team for over a decade, couldn't help but express his suspicions about the team’s qualifying strategies. While he secured a respectable third place, a significant 0.351 seconds behind the record-setting Kimi Antonelli—the youngest pole-sitter in Formula 1 history—Hamilton’s comments suggest that the battle for pole position might not be as straightforward as it appears.

With Mercedes having locked out the front row in every qualifying session this season, Hamilton noted that the gap between himself and Antonelli in Q1 was minimal, but then ballooned to a staggering seven-tenths by Q2. “In qualifying, they have another mode that they're able to go to, a bit like a 'party mode' back in the day,” Hamilton revealed, alluding to Mercedes' historic performance-boosting tactics. “We don’t have that,” he lamented, emphasizing a clear disparity in power management between the teams.

Under current regulations, teams are mandated to use the same engine settings for both qualifiers and races, but whispers of changes coming in the 2026 rules could introduce new avenues for battery deployment strategies, complicating the competitive landscape even further. Hamilton, while grappling with the undeniable speed of his rivals, admitted, “We’ve got to figure out what that is, but there’s something more they’re able to extract, particularly in Q2.”

The tension heated up as Hamilton battled alongside teammate George Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc during the Sprint, where Russell ultimately emerged victorious. The seven-time champion acknowledged that Ferrari had made adjustments to their car post-Sprint, bringing them closer to Mercedes for qualifying. Yet, he remains skeptical about whether Mercedes unveiled their full potential. “Whether they have more energy or more crank power, we don’t know,” Hamilton admitted, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the teams' true performance capabilities.

In a candid moment, Hamilton described the ongoing struggle with power dynamics during races. “I’m definitely feeling thirsty on power when we’re behind them,” he confessed, revealing the challenges he faces trying to keep pace with the front-runners. As he battles tire degradation and the inherent understeer of the track, Hamilton’s frustrations are palpable. “I was just trying to make it up through the corners, but it just wasn’t making any difference,” he said, showcasing the relentless pressure of competition in the ever-evolving sport.

Meanwhile, Leclerc, who has frequently found himself at odds with the Shanghai track, commented on his ongoing struggles, stating, “I'm struggling a lot on this track for this season.” As he prepares to start the Chinese GP from fourth, the Ferrari driver is acutely aware of the need for optimization in his car’s performance to challenge the likes of Mercedes effectively.

The drama intensifies as experts weigh in on how the long corners of the Shanghai International Circuit may not favor Leclerc’s driving style, while Hamilton seems to have regained a “positive energy” this season. Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 F1 world champion, highlighted the unique challenges posed by the track and its impact on driver performance.

As the excitement builds for the race, all eyes will be on Hamilton, Russell, and Antonelli as they gear up for an electrifying showdown. The stage is set for a thrilling Chinese Grand Prix, where every fraction of a second could determine the fate of the championship—will Hamilton's suspicions about Mercedes' hidden power strategies hold true, or will the competition prove too fierce?
