Takamoto Katsuta seizes lead at WRC Safari Rally Kenya after Solberg and Ogier’s dramatic halt

In a stunning twist at the WRC Safari Rally Kenya, Takamoto Katsuta has surged to the forefront after a dramatic turn of events saw both Oliver Solberg and Sebastien Ogier sidelined. The Toyota star capitalized on the misfortunes of his teammates, who were forced to halt their momentum during the critical road section back to service.

Early on, Solberg had showcased a commanding performance, finishing the morning stages with a robust 42.6-second lead over Ogier. However, the treacherous conditions of the Kenyan terrain proved to be a formidable adversary. Both drivers suffered catastrophic alternator failures, a consequence of the relentless roughness that characterizes this grueling rally. Juha Kankkunen, Toyota’s deputy team principal, acknowledged the challenging conditions, stating, “The last stage was quite muddy and rough, and the mud went into the engine side and broke the alternators for both of them.”

The drama didn’t stop there. Elfyn Evans, another Toyota competitor, faced his own disastrous fate, retiring from the rally for the first time since Greece 2024 due to severe damage to his right-rear suspension. As a result, Katsuta, who had previously finished the loop in third place, now finds himself in a prime position, boasting a 1 minute 07.5 seconds lead over Hyundai's Thierry Neuville. This pivotal moment sets the stage for Katsuta to seize his first-ever WRC victory.

Hyundai's Adrien Fourmaux is hot on Neuville's heels, trailing just 0.7 seconds behind, while teammate Esapekka Lappi holds fourth position. With the stakes higher than ever, crews are gearing up to tackle the same treacherous stages in the afternoon, intensifying the competition as they strive for victory.

Kankkunen reflected on the unpredictability of the Safari Rally, noting, “I have been in Kenya so many times that it doesn’t surprise me when something like that happens. The conditions have been really tough, and let’s say, the cars should be built for that. But in those muddy conditions, it can go everywhere.”

As the rally unfolds, fans are left on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating whether Katsuta can maintain his lead and secure a monumental victory amidst the chaos of the Safari Rally. The afternoon stages promise to be a thrilling continuation of this unforgettable battle, where anything can happen, and every second counts.
