Frederic Vasseur admits Ferrari trails Mercedes: a long road to catching up in 2026

Ferrari's Dream of Glory Shattered: Vasseur Declares Mercedes' Dominance Unmatched

In a shocking revelation that has sent ripples through the Formula 1 community, Ferrari’s team principal Frederic Vasseur has openly admitted the glaring gap between his team and the relentless Mercedes juggernaut. After a disheartening performance in Australia and a lackluster qualifying session in Shanghai, it is evident that the Scuderia has a mountain to climb if they wish to reclaim their former glory.

During the crucial Friday qualifying rounds in China, fans watched in dismay as Ferrari's hopes were dashed once again. The team could only manage a fourth-place finish, lagging behind not just Mercedes but also the formidable McLaren driven by Lando Norris. The stark reality is that Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes left Ferrari trailing by a substantial six-tenths of a second, a stark contrast that speaks volumes about the current state of affairs.

Vasseur did not mince words when discussing the team's performance, stating, “In SQ3, we struggled to put everything together. We somewhat underestimated the grip difference between the two sets of tires, and ultimately, we did not deliver the lap time we needed.” This candid acknowledgment from the Frenchman highlights not just a technical shortfall but also a potential crisis of confidence within the Ferrari camp.

In an effort to temper expectations, Vasseur laid bare the sobering truth: “The gap to Mercedes is still significant and won't be erased in 24 hours. Last week, we were eight-tenths off; today, six, and perhaps we could have shaved it down to five. But we are still behind. It’s up to us to put in the work because we know that this deficit will not vanish after just one or two races.”

The reality is harsh, as Vasseur continued to emphasize Mercedes’ clear advantage in energy delivery and distribution. “Mercedes has a significant edge in this area, and it’s our responsibility to improve on this aspect and do the best possible work on the chassis. Today, we could have performed better.”

As the 2026 season unfolds, Ferrari finds itself in a precarious position, desperately trying to close the gap to a Mercedes team that seems unassailable. With Vasseur’s stark admission, the question on every fan’s lips is: Can Ferrari rise from the ashes, or are they destined to remain in the shadows of their fierce rivals? The coming races will be crucial for the Scuderia, as they face the daunting challenge of turning their fortunes around. Buckle up, F1 fans—this battle is far from over!
