Pierre Gasly Sounds Alarm: Alpine Struggles to Meet Expectations After Disastrous Australian Debut

In a candid revelation, Pierre Gasly has admitted that the Alpine team left Melbourne “far from the maximum potential” of their new racing machine, raising eyebrows and concerns within the motorsport community. Following a disappointing weekend where the team managed to salvage only a single point, Gasly emphasized the urgent need for improvement on multiple fronts, from car setup to energy management. As he gears up for the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix, the stakes have never been higher.

Reflecting on the weekend's events, Gasly stated, “There were many lessons learned from Melbourne.” His frustration was palpable as he acknowledged that the team has much work ahead. “We are quite far from maximizing the potential of the package we have in our hands. There are numerous areas to enhance: the car, understanding the car, setup, engine, maximizing energy, qualifying, and race performance.” These comments underline a growing concern that the Alpine squad is lagging behind their competitors.

Gasly also noted that the Australian Grand Prix served as a crucial benchmark, highlighting where Alpine stands against the fierce competition. “It’s good to have a sort of baseline. Objectively, we felt we underperformed in Melbourne, and I hope we are in a better position here in China,” he affirmed, hinting at several new updates the team is bringing in hopes of improving performance—something that other rival teams are also implementing.

The stark contrast between the optimistic vibes during the Bahrain tests and the harsh reality in Australia cannot be ignored. When asked about the reasons behind this disparity, Gasly dismissed the notion that it was solely due to the characteristics of Albert Park. Instead, he pointed out that the competition has also evolved significantly. “I don't think it can be summed up to just one factor,” he explained. “Everyone is developing their cars. We saw some evolutions in two or three cars in Melbourne. It’s hard to say if it was specific to the track, but clearly, the conditions and layout didn’t play in our favor.”

Moreover, Gasly admitted that the team's internal execution fell short of expectations. “Overall, we simply didn’t do a perfect job maximizing our package,” he confessed. “During practice, we encountered some engine issues, focusing heavily on energy management while possibly overlooking some tire factors and setup elements.”

Despite these setbacks, Gasly expressed a flicker of hope, noting that the car's performance during the race was slightly improved. This suggests that the solution may lie in “fine-tuning” rather than a complete overhaul. “We performed better on Sunday than on Saturday, so it’s a matter of fine-tuning,” he concluded.

The environment within the Alpine garage is tense yet realistic. After a dismal 2025 season that saw the team at the bottom of the standings and undergoing a significant technical overhaul, the focus on improvement is palpable. Gasly assured that the atmosphere is one of determination rather than panic. “The vibe is that we all need to work harder and smarter,” he stated. “We all agree that we didn’t start the season the way we wanted and expected, but I don’t think there’s any alarm or need to dramatize what we have to improve.”

The French driver emphasized that the team is “very aware” of its current limitations, openly admitting that the performance displayed in Australia was “not enough.” “We are very conscious, objective. This was not good enough,” he asserted. “I have confidence that we can turn things around and put ourselves in a better position starting this weekend.”

With a recent history marked by leadership changes and a recovery plan that can no longer be measured in “100 races,” as the Enstone team has publicly stated, the challenge ahead in Shanghai will test Alpine's ability to transform Gasly's realistic outlook into tangible results on the track. The spotlight is on, and as the engines rev up for the Chinese Grand Prix, all eyes will be on whether Alpine can rise to the occasion or continue to falter.
