Title: Andre Lotterer Takes the Helm: Genesis LMDh Project Ignites a New Era in WEC Racing

In a bold move that could reshape the landscape of professional motorsport, Andre Lotterer has plunged into the exhilarating and treacherous waters of the Genesis LMDh project. This audacious venture represents not merely a new chapter for Lotterer but a groundbreaking leap into the unknown for the entire racing world. For the three-time Le Mans 24 Hours champion, whose illustrious career has spanned decades across the circuits of Europe and Japan, this marks a departure from the comfort of established teams into the thrilling chaos of building something entirely from scratch.

Lotterer, known for his impeccable record in integrating into well-oiled machines, finds himself in uncharted territory as he embarks on this formidable quest with the Hyundai Group's premium performance brand. “I’ve spent my career stepping into established projects,” Lotterer revealed, reflecting on his transition to Genesis. Unlike previous experiences with heavyweight teams like Porsche, where foundations were solidified by years of collaboration, this venture demands a raw, innovative spirit. “In Weissach, we relied on a team that had worked together for years… but this is 'day one' new,” he stated, emphasizing the magnitude of the challenge ahead.

Set to debut in 2024, the Genesis LMDh project is a blank canvas that Lotterer and fellow development driver Pipo Derani are tasked with bringing to life. The stakes are astronomical, and the journey is fraught with obstacles that will test both patience and prowess. Lotterer made the bold decision to step away from a full-time racing seat for the 2025 season in a calculated bid to invest his time and energy into this high-stakes endeavor. His only competitive outing during this period was a guest appearance in LMP2 at Le Mans, a rare foray into racing while he navigated the intricate process of developing the GMR-001 Hypercar.

“This is a completely different challenge,” Lotterer asserted. The sense of pride in witnessing a racing team materialize from an ambitious vision is unmatched. “You identify much more with the results when you’ve watched the fruit of your labor grow from the very first bolt,” he explained, highlighting the deep fulfillment that comes from crafting a team and car from the ground up.

However, the journey is not without its hurdles. Lotterer candidly acknowledges the frustrations of waiting for parts as supply chains and processes are still being defined. “It doesn’t happen overnight,” he noted. He is learning to navigate this rhythm while simultaneously fostering a strong team chemistry—a critical element for success in high-pressure racing environments.

The Hyundai Group, often perceived as a lumbering giant, has surprised Lotterer with its agility and efficiency. Under the leadership of team principal Cyril Abiteboul and sporting director Gabriele Tarquini, the team boasts an open-door policy that cultivates a dynamic and honest working atmosphere. “There are no games, no internal politics,” Lotterer proudly stated. This small, cohesive unit allows for swift decision-making and creative collaboration—an invaluable advantage during the development phase.

One of the key figures driving this ambitious project is Luc Donckerwolke, the chief creative officer whose visionary designs have graced iconic brands like Bentley and Lamborghini. Lotterer emphasized the importance of Donckerwolke’s hands-on involvement, saying, “They make us feel like an essential part of a new chapter.” With a clear mandate to inject a new adrenaline rush into the Genesis brand, the team is poised for greatness.

What sets the Genesis LMDh project apart is the maturity of the current hardware. Lotterer compares this new era to the tumultuous twilight of the LMP1 hybrids, recalling the desperate battles against reliability issues that plagued the final years of that class. “Hypercars are remarkably reliable from the first roll-out,” he affirmed, noting the simplicity and robustness of modern designs compared to the ultra-complex machines of yesteryear.

While the LMP1 era often demanded development cycles exceeding two years, most LMDh cars are rolling out with significantly less preparation time, a testament to their reliability. Lotterer's extensive experience serves as a crucial filter, ensuring that typical teething problems are kept off the Genesis to-do list.

Adding a layer of invaluable expertise to the team dynamic is Gabriele Tarquini, a touring car legend whose calming presence and profound understanding of a driver's psyche will be instrumental during the intense race weekends. “He’s the bridge that will provide the calm we need when things get intense,” Lotterer remarked, highlighting the strength of their partnership forged through mutual respect.

As Lotterer prepares to embark on this thrilling new season with Genesis, the anticipation is palpable. With a blend of technical mastery and the raw energy of a startup, the Genesis LMDh project is not just another racing initiative; it’s a powerful testament to the spirit of innovation and resilience in motorsport. The world will be watching closely as Lotterer and his team aim to reap the rewards of their hard work, transforming from mere visionaries into champions on the track.
