Victor Martins ignites Formula E future with Nissan: a bold shift from F1 ambitions

Victor Martins, the sensational three-time Formula 2 race winner, is set to make waves in the electrifying world of Formula E! Rejoining Nissan, Martins will take the wheel of one of their Gen3 Evo cars during the highly anticipated Jarama test next week, signaling a potential new chapter in his racing career. This fresh opportunity comes on the heels of shocking developments in Martins' previous plans to focus on endurance racing with Alpine, which were abruptly derailed by the manufacturer's shocking decision to shutter its Hypercar project beyond 2026.

Once a promising talent with aspirations in Formula 1, Martins’ path seemed to narrow following his exit from the Alpine Academy late last year. Although he transitioned to the Williams F1 driver academy in 2025 and was named test and development driver just this past January, the prospects of securing a seat on the F1 grid appear bleak at best. With this in mind, Martins is now eyeing a more promising future in Formula E, where he could emerge as a key contender for Nissan’s Gen4 lineup come the end of 2026.

The timing of Martins' renewed engagement with Nissan is nothing short of serendipitous. The cancellation of the Qatar World Endurance Championship prologue due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East opened the door for this budding collaboration. As a result, Martins will be back behind the wheel at Jarama on March 22, rekindling his connection with the team that previously saw him test in Berlin and Valencia in 2023.

Nissan is keenly aware of the competitive landscape within Formula E, especially with Oliver Rowland locked in until 2028 and Norman Nato’s performance dwindling. With just a single point to his name this season, Nato's struggle has raised eyebrows, making Martins an enticing option for the team. Sources suggest that Nissan is seriously considering Martins for a future Gen4 role, and he may even get a chance to test the Gen4 development car this summer.

In a motorsport world where fortunes can change with the blink of an eye, Martins has remained undeterred. He previously expressed admiration for Formula E, calling it “the second-best category in motorsport” and emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong relationships with manufacturers like Nissan. His commitment to the all-electric series has only intensified following the recent upheaval at Alpine.

Martins’ impressive track record and tenacity have not gone unnoticed. Team principal Tommaso Volpe lauded his “strong attitude” and capability during previous tests, setting him apart from other hopefuls. As the countdown to the Gen4 era begins, the pressure is mounting for drivers to secure their spots. With a limited number of seats available, Martins is in a prime position to elevate his career and transition to a race seat in Formula E.

As the motorsport community holds its breath, all eyes are now on Victor Martins. Will he seize this golden opportunity to etch his name into the annals of Formula E history? The electrifying future awaits, and Martins is gearing up to take center stage!
