Lando Norris declares fourth best is powerful enough for McLaren’s bold 2026 season comeback

Lando Norris Claims Fourth Place is a Triumph for McLaren – But Is It Enough?

In a bold declaration, Lando Norris, the reigning champion of Formula 1, asserts that starting the 2026 season in fourth place is a commendable achievement for McLaren. This confidence comes as the team prepares to battle against fierce competitors Ferrari and Mercedes, who are anticipated to dominate the early stages of the season. Norris, who just clinched his first title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, believes in McLaren's capacity to outpace their rivals over the span of 24 Grand Prix races.

However, the road ahead is fraught with challenges. The team faces a critical disadvantage with their power unit, provided by Mercedes, which may leave them lagging behind in the competitive hierarchy. Furthermore, they are grappling with significant tyre degradation issues that could hinder their performance against powerhouse teams like Red Bull and Ferrari.

Despite these concerns, Norris remains unshaken. The 26-year-old insists that McLaren is far from being on the back foot. “I don’t think we’re starting on the back foot,” he confidently stated. “Even if you’re second, third, or fourth quickest, I don’t think that’s on the back foot. I think that’s still a very good position to start in.” His optimism is rooted in McLaren's illustrious history of resilience and innovation during the Ground Effect Era, during which they have demonstrated a remarkable ability to rebound and surpass their competitors.

The McLaren team’s recent history is nothing short of spectacular. They clinched consecutive constructors’ championships in 2024 and 2025, breaking the long-standing dominance of Red Bull and Mercedes. This impressive feat is a testament to their technical prowess and determination to reclaim their status in the sport. Norris himself faced a near miss in the 2024 drivers’ championship but triumphed in 2025, showcasing the team’s potential to rise to the occasion.

So, why does Norris believe that fourth place is a stepping stone rather than a setback? “In previous years where it’s been harder to improve over the course of a season, we’ve certainly proved that you could,” he continued. “And I continue to believe that it’s a long, very long season.” This perspective is vital as the team gears up for their 2026 campaign, especially considering the lessons learned from their tumultuous 2023 season.

The 2023 season began in disaster for McLaren, with a double DNF after lackluster qualifying performances. Yet, by the end of the year, they had transformed their fortunes, with Oscar Piastri clinching a Sprint Race victory in Qatar against the formidable Max Verstappen. The key to their resurgence was an innovative upgrade package introduced at the Austrian Grand Prix, which propelled them from an average finish of 12th to a remarkable average of 5th.

This strategic overhaul included a complete redesign of their aerodynamics, enhancing downforce and airflow, which was pivotal in their battle against rivals. Norris received extensive updates, resulting in an improved race pace that allowed him to lead early laps at his home race.

Now, as they approach the 2026 season, the echoes of their past struggles serve as inspiration. With similar challenges looming, such as tyre degradation, McLaren is poised to leverage their historical capacity for improvement. Norris is betting on their ability to adapt and evolve, proving that they can not only compete but potentially outshine the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari once again.

As the countdown to the Australian Grand Prix begins, all eyes will be on McLaren and their relentless pursuit of glory. Can Lando Norris and his team turn fourth place into a launchpad for dominance? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the spirit of McLaren is alive and ready to fight.
