Jos Verstappen reveals secrets behind Max’s meteoric rise to F1 greatness: a father’s journey

Title: From Father to Champion: The Unbelievable Journey of Jos Verstappen and His Son Max in Formula 1

In the high-octane world of Formula 1, few stories resonate as powerfully as that of Jos Verstappen and his son, Max. While Jos’s own stint as an F1 driver was overshadowed by the meteoric rise of his son, his unwavering dedication and strategic guidance have propelled Max to unparalleled heights, securing four world championships in just a few short years: 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

Born on March 4, 1972, in Montfort, Netherlands, Jos's journey into motorsport began with karting, eventually leading him to Formula Three and then the elite realm of F1 in 1994. However, it was not until he turned his focus entirely to nurturing Max's career that Jos truly became a pivotal player in the sport. His relentless mentorship has resulted in Max's rapid ascent, culminating in historic victories, including a dramatic title win in Abu Dhabi in late 2021.

From an early age, Jos recognized Max's prodigious talent. At just four years old, he bought his son his first go-kart, igniting a fierce competitive spirit. By the age of seven, Max was already defeating competitors who were up to five years his senior. “My dad never said I was going to be a champion,” Max revealed in a 2022 interview. “He always kept me grounded, telling me I might end up as a truck driver or a bus driver. It was a good way of making me realize that I had to keep pushing myself.”

While Jos did not achieve the same level of success in his own career—competing for seven different teams and never winning a race—his legacy is now defined by his son's triumphs. In his 106 Grand Prix starts, Jos only secured two podium finishes, both in the 1994 season with Benetton, where his teammate was none other than the legendary Michael Schumacher. Despite his own challenges, including a season in reserve as a test driver and a career that ended in 2003, Jos turned his attention to ensuring that Max would surpass his achievements.

But Jos Verstappen's life is not just a tale of motorsport glory. His personal life has been marred by controversy. He was married to former karting star Sophie Kumpen, with whom he has two children, Max and daughter Victoria Jane. After their divorce, Jos faced legal trouble, including a conviction for breaching a restraining order against Kumpen in 1996. Following this tumultuous period, he remarried Kelly van der Waal, adding another daughter, Blue Jaye, to his family. However, his past continued to haunt him as he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder related to an incident involving an ex-girlfriend, though the charges were ultimately dropped. Today, he is married to Sandy Sijtsma and has two more children, Jason Jaxx and Mila Faye.

As Max Verstappen continues to dominate the F1 scene, it's clear that the foundation laid by Jos has been instrumental in shaping not just a champion, but a legacy. With the Verstappen name now synonymous with excellence in motorsport, the world watches in anticipation to see what the future holds for this remarkable father-son duo. Will Jos’s relentless pursuit of excellence continue to fuel Max's championship aspirations? Only time will tell, but one thing remains certain: the Verstappen story is far from over.
