Toto Wolff reveals explosive FIA backing for Mercedes amid engine controversy shake-up

### F1 2026: Toto Wolff Unveils FIA President's Secret Backing Amid Engine Scandal!

In a shocking revelation that could shake the very foundations of Formula 1, Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff has declared that he has a formidable ally in the ongoing engine controversy—the FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem. This explosive statement comes as the motorsport world buzzes with talk of Mercedes' controversial engine tactics, which have raised eyebrows and sparked outrage among rival teams.

At the heart of the controversy is Mercedes' ingenious manipulation of the geometric compression ratio within their power unit. When stationary, their engine measures at the permissible 16:1 ratio. However, as the car accelerates, this ratio surges to a staggering 18:1—previously deemed acceptable under past FIA regulations that only measured engine compression at ambient temperatures. This loophole has reportedly granted Mercedes an astonishing advantage of 20-30 brake horsepower, translating to a potential 0.3 seconds shaved off lap times! Such gains are a nightmare for competitors who fear they are racing against a team wielding a technical cheat code.

Adding fuel to the fire, a recent vote among the five F1 power unit manufacturers overwhelmingly favored a rule change, with a 4-1 outcome in support of more stringent regulations. Starting June 1, 2026, the compression ratio will be assessed at both ambient and operational temperatures, meaning Mercedes will need to tread carefully to avoid exceeding the 16:1 threshold during tests, especially with the Monaco Grand Prix on the horizon.

Despite looming regulation changes, Wolff confidently asserted that Mercedes enjoys the backing of FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. During a press briefing at Bahrain testing, he stated, “It’s not only the teams. You need the votes from the governing body, and you need the votes from the commercial rights holder. If they decided to share an opinion and an agenda, then you’re screwed.” Such candid remarks underscore the intricate web of politics interwoven within the sport.

Wolff praised Ben Sulayem's deep understanding of engines and cars, asserting that the FIA president is well aware of the regulations and their correct application. “All along, we had the support of Mohammed Ben Sulayem. He’s someone who, interestingly, is very much into his engines and his cars,” he remarked. When pressed about the president’s potential influence on resolving these contentious issues, Wolff made it clear: “Well, yeah, of course, he’s the president of the FIA. He has all the powers in his hands to be part of the decision making. At the end of the day, it’s his call.”

The stakes have never been higher as the sport navigates this treacherous landscape of technological warfare and regulatory scrutiny. With the impending rule changes, Mercedes must recalibrate its strategies while holding onto its powerful allies. Will Wolff's confidence in Ben Sulayem and Domenicali prove to be a game-changer, or will the tide turn against them as rivals prepare to pounce? The countdown to the Monaco Grand Prix is on, and the drama is just beginning to unfold!
