Damon Hill's Triumphant Return to Williams: A Legendary Comeback!
In a dazzling development for motorsport enthusiasts, Damon Hill is set to reclaim his place in the heart of Williams Racing as its official ambassador for the upcoming 2026 Formula 1 season! This electrifying announcement comes on the heels of Jenson Button's recent departure from the team, where he transitioned to a similar role at Aston Martin. Hill's return marks a poignant moment, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of his iconic world championship victory with Williams, a team where he notched an impressive 21 of his 22 grand prix wins!
At 65 years young, Hill joins a powerhouse ambassadorial trio that includes the legendary Jacques Villeneuve, the last driver to secure a world title for Williams in 1997, and the sensational Jamie Chadwick, a three-time W Series champion. “Williams is truly a special place for me and where some of the defining moments of my career took place,” Hill said, reflecting on his storied past with the team. He continued, “I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of this sport and to have achieved what I did, and returning as an ambassador is a real privilege. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the team’s history and help to support its legacy and future.”
Hill's return effectively fills the void left by Button, who announced in February his shift to Aston Martin to bolster the team's media, partner, and commercial initiatives. While Hill's F1 debut with Williams came in 2000, he has remained a pivotal figure in the sport, recently serving as a pundit for Sky Sports F1.
With the 2026 season poised to unveil sweeping regulatory changes at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix from March 6-8, Williams hopes to re-establish itself firmly in the midfield battle. Team principal James Vowles expressed his excitement about Hill's return, stating, “It’s an honour to welcome Damon back to Williams. Few individuals represent this team quite like him. Damon played a defining role in one of the most successful eras in our history, becoming a world champion with Williams and leaving a legacy that continues to inspire the team today.”
Not only is Hill stepping back into the spotlight, but he will also join forces with the formidable duo of Villeneuve and Chadwick, who have been ambassadors since 2025 and 2024, respectively. Together, they embody everything that Williams stands for: a rich history, a commitment to nurturing new talent, and an unwavering ambition to compete at the pinnacle of motorsport once again. “Having figures like them representing Williams as we move forward is something we’re immensely proud of,” Vowles added, underlining the significance of this powerhouse lineup.
As Hill embarks on this new chapter in his illustrious career, fans and followers of Formula 1 can hardly contain their excitement. The stage is set for a thrilling season ahead, and with Hill back in the Williams fold, the legacy of this iconic team is bound to soar to new heights!
