Ferrari reigns supreme at Bahrain F1 tests: Mercedes logs most laps but faces reliability fears

Ferrari Dominates While Mercedes Races Ahead in Bahrain Pre-Season Tests: The Numbers You Can't Ignore!

The Bahrain International Circuit was ablaze with excitement as the second pre-season test of the 2026 Formula 1 season wrapped up, revealing a thrilling showdown between Ferrari and Mercedes. Charles Leclerc, the Monegasque sensation, clocked a blistering 1m31.992s, claiming the fastest lap of the three-day event and solidifying Ferrari’s position at the top of the speed charts. Meanwhile, Mercedes, with its relentless pursuit of data, amassed an astonishing 432 laps, showcasing its commitment to performance and reliability.

Leclerc's individual prowess was undeniably the highlight, but it was Mercedes that made headlines by completing the most laps, a staggering feat that underscores their focus on accumulating critical mileage and fine-tuning their machine. The Brackley team’s Andrea Kimi Antonelli also shone bright, recording the second-fastest time at 1m32.803s. George Russell echoed a sentiment that resonates throughout the paddock: while reliability remains a key concern, the team is energized by the new car’s performance.

The McLaren team, reigning champions, closed the test with 395 laps and a commendable lap time of 1m32.861s from Oscar Piastri. Despite some downtime in the pits, McLaren's consistency remains a positive indicator as they gear up for the season. Other teams, including Red Bull, which logged 329 laps with Max Verstappen’s best time at 1m33.109s, and Racing Bulls, which boasted 407 laps, are also vying for supremacy in a season that's shaping up to be nothing short of electric.

Notably, Haas and Williams are making strides as well. Haas, with a solid 404 laps and Ollie Bearman clocking in at 1m33.487s, appears to be on a surprisingly positive trajectory. Williams, recovering from a shaky start after missing the Barcelona shakedown, managed 368 laps, though Carlos Sainz’s best time of 1m34.342s reflects a team still finding its footing.

Alpine and Audi are also in the mix, with Pierre Gasly achieving a lap time of 1m33.421s for Alpine and Gabriel Bortoleto leading Audi with 1m33.755s. Both teams are adapting to new regulations and technological shifts, making their progress critical to watch as the season unfolds.

However, not all teams enjoyed the same level of success during the Bahrain tests. Aston Martin found itself at the bottom of the lap count, only managing a mere 128 laps. Lance Stroll’s fastest time of 1m35.974s highlighted a challenging test period, exacerbated by Fernando Alonso's crash and battery issues. Despite these setbacks, Aston Martin remains optimistic, insisting they have the technical resources to recover throughout the season.

As the teams prepare to shift into high gear for the upcoming season, the Bahrain tests have laid the groundwork for an exhilarating year ahead. With Ferrari’s speed, Mercedes’ endurance, and a host of teams eager to close the gap, fans can expect fierce rivalries and dramatic races. Buckle up, because the 2026 Formula 1 season looks set to be a wild ride!
