Barcelona secures thrilling F1 future: joins European rotation with legendary Spa-Francorchamps

Barcelona Makes a Bold Statement: F1 Returns with a Thrilling New Rotation!

In a monumental move that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport world, Formula 1 has officially solidified a groundbreaking agreement with the organizers of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Starting in 2028, the iconic Montmelo circuit will be a cornerstone of the F1 calendar, hosting races for three out of the next six years in a highly anticipated rotation with the legendary Spa-Francorchamps!

As the final year of its current contract approached, Barcelona found itself under intense scrutiny, with critics demanding substantial investments to modernize its aging facilities. The pressure was palpable, especially after the Spanish Grand Prix title was snatched away by a new race set to debut in Madrid this September at the under-construction Madring circuit. However, Barcelona and the Catalan government were relentless in their efforts to secure their place in Formula 1 history, demonstrating their commitment to this prestigious event.

Now, the deal is official: Barcelona will alternate with Spa-Francorchamps, creating an exhilarating two-track rotation. Spa will host F1 events in 2027, 2029, and 2031, while the vibrant city of Barcelona takes the spotlight in 2028, 2030, and 2032. This arrangement effectively sidelines Spa's aspirations for a full-time return to the calendar, despite fervent efforts from Belgian promoters to reclaim their annual race status.

Pol Gibert, CEO of Circuits de Catalunya SL, couldn't contain his excitement, stating, “This renewal is the result of a strong relationship and close collaboration and represents a very important step in further consolidating Catalonia as a key fixture on the international calendar.” The economic ramifications are staggering, with Formula 1 generating an eye-watering impact of over €300 million per event. Gibert emphasized that this race is not just a local spectacle; it serves as a strategic platform to showcase Catalonia on the global stage as a premier destination for top-tier sporting events.

Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of Formula 1, echoed Gibert's sentiments, expressing his enthusiasm for the continued partnership. “Barcelona is an incredible city, and the Formula 1 fans there always welcome us with such passion, so I am delighted that we will continue to race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for years to come.” He acknowledged the significant investments made in the circuit and the amazing fan festivals that have elevated the experience for attendees and the city alike. “I can’t wait to see our brilliant fans in Barcelona in June!” Domenicali declared, setting the stage for an electrifying future.

Adding to the excitement, the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort has been confirmed for its final event in 2026, paving the way for the return of the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao in 2027 and 2028. With Barcelona and Spa sharing race slots, there remains an enticing opportunity to fill one more space in the 24-race calendar for 2027. Rumors swirl around the potential return of the Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul as a frontrunner to fill this coveted slot.

The motorsport community is buzzing with anticipation as Barcelona prepares to reclaim its status as a key player in Formula 1. With its spectacular scenery, passionate fans, and a commitment to excellence, the stage is set for a thrilling showdown on the iconic streets of Barcelona—let the countdown begin!
