Charles Leclerc raises alarm over Ferrari’s chances as rivals hide true pace in Bahrain test

Title: Charles Leclerc Casts Doubt on Rivals’ Speed as Ferrari Prepares for Crucial F1 Season

In an electrifying prelude to the 2026 Formula 1 season, Charles Leclerc has ignited controversy by expressing skepticism about the true performance of Ferrari's rivals following the opening pre-season tests in Bahrain. The Monegasque racer feels that while Ferrari may currently rank as the third fastest team, the reality of their position remains shrouded in mystery.

Ferrari, the iconic Italian powerhouse, is under immense pressure as it embarks on what many see as a make-or-break season. After a disappointing debut year in 2025 alongside the legendary Lewis Hamilton, both drivers are eager to capitalize on a fresh start facilitated by the new regulations. The SF-26, Ferrari's latest contender, was first unveiled in January at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, before making a statement in Bahrain during the initial testing phase.

Leclerc made headlines by topping the lap charts on the second day of testing, yet he remains wary of the times posted by other teams, suspecting that they may be concealing their true capabilities. “I think everybody is trying to throw the ball to the other guys,” he remarked, addressing the media. The complexities of the hybrid engines, especially with their enhanced electric power, have made it increasingly difficult to gauge competitive standing accurately.

He elaborated, “It was difficult with the previous generation of cars, but now… there are so many small tweaks that you can do. You can hide the real potential of the car in many different ways now.” This admission underscores the intricate strategies teams may employ as they navigate the new technical landscape.

While Leclerc is optimistic about Ferrari's reliability—having faced no issues thus far—he acknowledges the challenges ahead. “Everything stacks up with what we expected. So that’s a good base to then start to work on and to improve,” he stated, emphasizing the need for continuous enhancement.

As the season-opener in Australia approaches, the competition is fierce. Mercedes and Red Bull are both anticipated to be formidable hurdles for Ferrari, with rumors swirling about Mercedes potentially exploiting power unit regulations to gain an edge. Leclerc is acutely aware of the talent present in rival teams, admitting, “I think Red Bull have shown very impressive things power unit-wise since the start of the test, especially here.”

The stakes are high, and Leclerc's strategic insight reveals a cautious optimism. He noted, “Mercedes are showing some very impressive things as well sometimes, but I would say they are hiding a lot more. I would expect them to especially be a bit ahead of us.”

The enigma surrounding McLaren's MCL40 adds another layer of intrigue. Despite being puzzled by their true competitive potential, Leclerc refuses to write them off entirely. “The McLaren is a little bit more difficult to understand, but from where I stand now it’s Red Bull, Mercedes in front and then us,” he concluded, hinting that the gap may not be insurmountable.

As the countdown to the season accelerates, all eyes are on Ferrari. With Leclerc at the wheel, the team is gearing up to challenge the status quo and reclaim its position at the forefront of Formula 1 racing. Will they rise to the occasion, or will the shadow of their rivals prove too daunting? The answer lies just ahead on the horizon.
