Carlos Sainz declares Red Bull Ford’s power units the game-changer for 2026 F1 season

Title: Red Bull Ford Dominates Bahrain Testing: Carlos Sainz Declares Them “A Clear Step Ahead!”

In a stunning revelation from the Bahrain winter testing, Williams driver Carlos Sainz has thrown down the gauntlet, declaring that Red Bull Ford’s power units are not just leading the pack—they're “a clear step ahead” of their competitors! This bold assertion aligns with comments made by Mercedes chief Toto Wolff, who pinpointed Red Bull's remarkable energy efficiency and deployment from their new electric motor as the gold standard in the current testing phase.

With the spotlight firmly on Red Bull Ford, Sainz's insights paint a picture of a formidable force gearing up for the 2026 season. “It’s still extremely early days,” Sainz acknowledged, “but judging by the GPS data from yesterday, it’s evident that Red Bull Ford Powertrains were operating at a level that was more than just impressive—it was downright exceptional!” He didn’t hold back, insisting that the difference was not marginal but substantial, leaving competitors scrambling to keep pace.

As Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen demonstrated during longer runs, the data backs Sainz's claims. With the ability to recharge his battery and unleash a staggering 350kW on the straights, Verstappen was consistently clocking higher top speeds than the rest of the field—lap after lap! This dominance raises eyebrows and sets the stage for a thrilling season ahead.

However, as Sainz points out, there’s always a caveat in winter testing. Strategies can diverge, and teams often employ subterfuge to mask their true capabilities. There are still five critical days of testing where teams will fine-tune their power unit strategies, a paramount focus under the new 2026 regulations.

The stakes are sky-high as the amount of energy produced from the electric motors has tripled compared to previous models, now contributing to half of the total power output. But with battery capacities remaining static, drivers face the challenge of depleting their energy reserves multiple times each lap. This has led to innovative techniques on the track, with drivers executing gear shifts in ways that maximize energy recovery during slow corners.

Sainz emphasizes that mastering these energy harvesting techniques—without compromising cornering performance—is essential for unlocking the full potential of the car. “The key to these regulations is not about separating the elements but integrating them seamlessly,” he elaborated. “From what I observed yesterday, Red Bull seems to have nailed this integration, allowing drivers to respond instinctively to the car’s demands without hesitation.”

As drivers gear up for what promises to be a fierce championship, the integration of power units, gearboxes, and driver preferences emerges as a critical factor. Sainz warns that the moment any of these components falter is when the real challenges will begin. “Every driver will have to adapt,” he stated, “and find the perfect balance to ensure optimal performance.”

As the Bahrain testing continues, the racing world watches with bated breath. Will Red Bull Ford maintain their lead as the season unfolds? One thing is for certain: the competition is heating up, and only time will reveal who truly reigns supreme in the 2026 Formula 1 season. Buckle up, because this is just the beginning!
