Founded in November 2014, Nio has just celebrated a historic milestone: on February 6th, it completed its 100 millionth battery swap, 2819 days after starting this operation. It is worth noting that the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer opened its first battery swap center in May 2018 in Shenzhen, its home country, and since then, it has invested heavily in expanding the infrastructure, despite ongoing doubts about the advantages of quickly replacing a depleted battery with a charged one.
According to Nio, owners of electric vehicles equipped with this battery swap solution have already consumed about 5.3 billion kWh of electricity with the batteries installed in its own network of swap stations. This has saved approximately 83 million hours (88 hours per user, on average) in conventional charging operations.
Currently, in China, Nio has 3729 fast battery swap centers, 1020 of which are operational on the national highway network. The brand also operates 4900 charging points in the domestic market, which means 28,035 charging stations. The plan for 2026 includes the construction of an additional 1000 battery swap centers.
