Isack Hadjar faces daunting challenge as Max Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate: can he rise to glory?

Isack Hadjar: The Rising Star in Verstappen’s Shadow at Red Bull

In the high-octane world of Formula 1, few challenges are as daunting as stepping into the shoes of a reigning champion. Isack Hadjar, the latest recruit on the Red Bull team, finds himself in this exact position as he partners with the illustrious four-time World Champion Max Verstappen. The stakes are high, and the road ahead is fraught with both opportunity and intense scrutiny.

On the popular Stay on Track podcast, former driver Damon Hill expressed confidence in Hadjar’s potential, stating that the young driver has “earned his position” at Red Bull. His rookie year with Racing Bulls in 2025 was nothing short of impressive, leaving many—including co-host Johnny Herbert—surprised by his remarkable consistency and work ethic. Herbert declared, “He surprised so many,” pointing to Hadjar’s ability to provide crucial feedback that helped the team excel on the track.

But it’s not just talent that Hadjar brings to the table; it’s his vibrant personality that could prove to be an invaluable asset in the high-pressure environment of Red Bull Racing. Hill noted that Hadjar is “not a quiet little mouse,” highlighting his expressive nature that energizes the team. His radio communications, while sometimes colorful, reflect a genuine enthusiasm that resonates with his teammates, making him a spirited presence in the garage.

However, the reality of being Verstappen’s teammate comes with its own set of challenges. As the top driver at Red Bull, Verstappen’s dominance means Hadjar will likely play a supportive role—a reality that can be difficult for any competitor to accept. Hill articulated this sentiment, suggesting that Hadjar may find himself in a position where he is “the whipping boy for the team.” He stated, “The best he can do is a pat on the head from Max,” implying that Hadjar’s path to success will require him to embrace the role of the second driver.

The duality of this situation is striking: Hadjar must balance his own ambitions with the overarching goal of aiding Verstappen in his pursuit of another Drivers’ Championship, while simultaneously contributing to the Constructors’ title aspirations of Red Bull. The shadow of Verstappen looms large; after all, previous drivers like Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda struggled under similar circumstances, failing to make a lasting impression on the team.

Yet, Hill and Herbert agree that Hadjar possesses the mindset necessary for this unique challenge. He seems to have entered Red Bull with a clear understanding of his position, acknowledging Verstappen’s superiority and preparing for what could be a “very frustrating” initial phase as he learns from the best. Hill emphasized that if Hadjar wants to elevate himself to the top, he must approach his role with a long-term vision: “He’s going to have to say, ‘Okay, I’m here to strengthen myself, to learn, in order to be number one at some point somewhere.’”

Herbert echoed this notion, suggesting that Hadjar has the potential to thrive but will need to navigate the complexities of team dynamics carefully. “Can he do it? Yes. Has he got to play the right game to be able to do it? Probably not next year, but in the next couple of years, yes,” he asserted.

As Red Bull gears up for another competitive season, all eyes will be on Isack Hadjar. Will he rise to the occasion and carve out his own legacy in the shadow of Verstappen, or will he become just another name in the annals of F1 history? One thing is for sure: the world will be watching as this young driver embarks on a journey filled with both peril and promise. Buckle up—this is going to be one thrilling ride!
