Lewis Hamilton: A Fallen Giant in the F1 Arena? Fernando Alonso Poised to Outshine Him!

In a shocking twist in the Formula 1 world, former driver Johnny Herbert has dropped a bombshell: he believes Fernando Alonso would dominate Lewis Hamilton in a one-on-one showdown, provided both were behind the wheel of identical machinery. This provocative statement comes amidst a turbulent season for Hamilton, who seems to be grappling with a crisis of confidence and performance.

Once a titan of the sport, Hamilton’s struggles have been amplified following a dismal stint at Ferrari last year, where the seven-time world champion shockingly failed to secure a single podium finish. This was a stark contrast to his illustrious career, where he has amassed an impressive collection of titles and records. But as Hamilton battles through the latter stages of his career, doubts about his future loom large.

Herbert, who witnessed the fierce rivalry between Hamilton and Alonso during their single season as teammates in 2007—where they finished neck and neck on points—now suggests that Alonso has the edge. “If I look at those two, and I go, ‘right, which one would I expect, if he were given the car, which one would be the one I put my money on?’ Unfortunately, sadly, I’d probably go with Fernando,” Herbert candidly shared on the Stay On Track podcast.

Alonso, despite piloting a less-than-stellar Aston Martin, continues to amaze fans and critics alike by consistently extracting impressive performance from his vehicle. Herbert noted, “Fernando, he’s in a bad car in that Aston Martin. It’s not the best. It’s sort of there or thereabouts sometimes. But he’s able to sort of squeeze that extra something out of it.” In contrast, Hamilton has appeared visibly defeated during the latter half of the season, expressing relief at the impending conclusion of a year filled with frustration.

The former F1 driver didn’t hold back on his assessment of Hamilton’s current state, stating, “He’s lost. He cannot understand what he needs to do to get around the problem he’s got.” The stark difference in their performances is alarming, especially when you consider that while Hamilton flounders, rising star Charles Leclerc seems to navigate the challenges of the track with relative ease.

As the F1 landscape prepares for the 2026 season, with revolutionary changes set to shake up the sport—including movable wings and sustainable fuel—fans are left to ponder whether Hamilton can reclaim his throne or if Alonso will continue to rise as the phoenix that outpaces his former rival.

The debate rages on: Is Hamilton’s legacy tarnished, or is there a flicker of hope for the fallen champion? One thing is for sure—this rivalry is anything but over, and the world will be watching.
