Max Verstappen hints at future team principal role: could F1 champion reinvent racing?

Max Verstappen, the electrifying four-time Formula 1 champion, is not just eyeing the racetrack for his future—he’s contemplating a major shift to the role of team principal! At just 28 years old, this prodigy has already etched his name into the annals of F1 history, securing his place as one of the greatest with a staggering tally of victories that ranks him third all-time. However, the Dutch dynamo is making it clear: he won’t be lingering in the cockpit for as long as legends like Fernando Alonso or Lewis Hamilton.

In a candid revelation, Verstappen hinted at a possible pivot to leadership within the racing world, potentially steering a team in a different series altogether. This comes on the heels of his triumphs with his own GT racing venture, Verstappen.com Racing, which celebrated a monumental victory in the GT World Challenge Europe Gold Cup in 2025. “I’m 28 now and have a contract with Red Bull until 2028,” Verstappen disclosed in an interview, emphasizing his commitment to the team. “I intend to fulfill it. At this point, I’m ruling out a team change.”

But there’s a bittersweet note to this story; Verstappen expressed his sadness over the impending departure of his mentor, Helmut Marko, who will exit the Red Bull scene in 2026. “I’ll miss him,” he lamented, showcasing the deep bonds formed in the high-octane world of F1.

When pressed about his longevity in the sport, Verstappen was refreshingly honest. “At 40, I might still be standing in the pits as a team principal in another series,” he quipped, casting doubt on the idea of racing well into his forties. With a demanding calendar featuring 24 races per season, his patience is wearing thin. “I don’t see myself driving in Formula 1 until I’m 44. Even being in F1 at 34 would be too much,” he stated emphatically during an end-of-season interview with Viaplay.

The timeline of Verstappen’s career is precarious. While he’s contracted at Red Bull until 2028, the upcoming regulation changes in 2026 will be pivotal. His next career move could very well determine whether he remains at four world titles—tied with Sebastian Vettel—or aims higher, challenging the legendary records of Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, both boasting seven championships.

Beyond the thrill of racing, Verstappen has a tapestry of interests that extend into GT racing and sim racing, not to mention the responsibilities of a young family. As he plots his future, one thing is clear: Max Verstappen is not just a champion on the track; he’s a strategic thinker with an eye on the bigger picture, ready to redefine his legacy beyond driving.

What’s next for this F1 superstar? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the motorsport world will be watching closely as Verstappen gears up for the next chapter of his extraordinary journey!
