Will Power’s thrilling debut with Andretti at Phoenix tire test reveals high hopes for IndyCar season

Will Power Makes a Stunning Debut with Andretti Global in Thrilling Phoenix Tire Test

In a breathtaking display of skill and adaptability, Will Power, the celebrated Australian driver, has officially kicked off his new chapter with Andretti Global during an exhilarating tire test at the iconic Phoenix Raceway. Clad in an all-black firesuit that mirrored the sleek aesthetics of his No. 26 Honda, Power embraced the challenge on the 1-mile tri-oval, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling season ahead.

The tire test, taking place in preparation for the highly anticipated open test scheduled for February 17-18, was a collaborative effort with fellow competitor and former Team Penske teammate, Josef Newgarden. This pivotal outing is a crucial step in Firestone’s ongoing tire development program, specifically aimed at enhancing performance ahead of the cross-race weekend with NASCAR on March 6-7.

Over four intense hours of on-track action, Power and Newgarden were tasked with fine-tuning the new superspeedway tires, which have been significantly revamped. Firestone has confirmed that the right front tire tested is not only wider than anything previously used in IndyCar but also boasts unique construction characteristics that promise to elevate cornering grip to unprecedented levels. This innovative technology marks a bold new frontier in tire performance for the series.

Despite the cloudy skies and temperatures hovering in the mid-50s, the conditions did little to dampen Power’s enthusiasm. Reflecting on his transition from Team Penske, where he spent an impressive 17 seasons, he admitted, “It’s funny, you feel very out of place but once you get in the car and you get rolling, then it’s just like, ‘Oh.’ It’s an Indy car.” His excitement was palpable as he noted, “Very good first few runs. Now, we got plenty of work to do. It’s nice to feel the Honda engine; it’s very good. Definitely looking forward to getting in amongst a lot more cars to see where we stack up.”

Power, a two-time series champion and the 2018 Indianapolis 500 victor, is not just adapting to a new team; he’s immersing himself in a fresh environment. With a focus on building rapport with his race engineer, Andy Listes, Power is determined to master the nuances of his new setup. “Yeah, just learning everyone’s name,” he chuckled, highlighting the challenges of acclimating to a new team dynamic. “You’re just trying to understand how everything works in this team… It’s just basic things like that. But, all good.”

With memories of previous races etched in his mind, Power is eager to conquer Phoenix, a track where he has unfinished business. Having started third and led for 80 laps in the last IndyCar race there in 2018, only to suffer a setback due to contact, he is more motivated than ever. “I have unfinished business here,” Power declared. “I’ve had a couple of chances to win, and it hasn’t played out. But I do like this place. I like the area, the city. Yeah, it’s going to be fun.”

As the countdown to the open test begins, Power’s confidence is bolstered by the opportunity to refine his skills on a circuit that has historically posed challenges. “It’s good for us that we’re having an open test here because I feel like, just look at the results in the past, it’s somewhere where we need to improve, so we’ll get plenty of time. It’s going to be fun.”

Fans and analysts alike are buzzing with anticipation as Will Power gears up for a new era with Andretti Global. With a perfect blend of expertise and ambition, he aims not only to leave a mark on the upcoming season but to solidify his legacy in the world of IndyCar racing. Buckle up, because the journey is just beginning!
