Rally Hungary cancellation shocks fans: European Rally Championship scrambles for replacement event

Rally Hungary Axed: European Rally Championship in Urgent Search for Replacement!

In a shocking turn of events, the European Rally Championship (ERC) is scrambling to find a substitute round after the cancellation of its highly anticipated season opener in Hungary for 2026. Scheduled for March 22-24, this event was set to kick off the eight-round ERC season. However, financial difficulties faced by the rally organizers have thrown a wrench into the plans, leaving fans and teams alike in dismay.

Rally Hungary, which made its ERC debut in 2019, has been a staple on the championship calendar, although it did experience a hiatus in 2022. Last year’s thrilling round saw Finland’s Roope Korhonen emerge victorious, but now all eyes are on the championship as it confronts this unforeseen setback.

With the cancellation confirmed, the ERC is now poised to shift its focus to April, when the championship will likely commence with the asphalt stages of the Rally Sierra Morena in Spain from April 17-19. The urgency for a replacement round is palpable, and fans are left wondering where and when this crucial event will occur. ERC championship manager Iain Campbell has stated, “Since being made aware that Rally Hungary has been cancelled, we have been working on securing an appropriate replacement. The process is ongoing, and an update will be provided in due course.” His words hint at the frantic efforts underway behind the scenes to salvage the season.

The ERC’s calendar doesn’t stop there; following Rally Sierra Morena, the championship will head to Sweden for the Royal Rally of Scandinavia in May. Fans can also look forward to exciting rounds in Italy (Rally di Roma Capitale) and Rally Poland in July, before the series ventures to the Czech Republic for the Barum Czech Rally Zlin in August. The season will culminate with high-stakes races in Wales (Rali Ceredigion) in September, and Portugal (Rally Five Cities) in October.

As the dust settles on this cancellation, the ERC faces a pivotal moment. Will they rise to the challenge and find a worthy replacement to keep the excitement brewing among fans? The clock is ticking, and the racing community is on the edge of its seat, eagerly awaiting developments. Stay tuned for updates as the situation unfolds in this gripping saga of motorsport!
