Alonso: Nossa performance em Suzuka superou as expectativas.

Aston Martin revealed a significant upgrade package for their AMR24 during the recent race in Japan. While Lance Stroll had the car upgraded from the start, Fernando Alonso did not have the chance to try it out until the third free practice session. Surprisingly, it was Alonso who made the most of the updated AMR24, securing fifth place in qualifying compared to Stroll’s 16th place. This once again highlights the considerable performance difference between the Aston Martin drivers. During the race, Alonso managed to finish in sixth place, overtaking McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. This is particularly notable as Aston Martin is currently behind these two teams. Alonso expressed his satisfaction with the weekend, stating that it was one of his best performances in a long time. He acknowledged that the team slightly exceeded their expected position in Japan, but credited his strong race execution and impressive pit stops. Alonso also mentioned the need to analyze the upgrade package and review the data before the next race in Shanghai. On the other hand, Stroll struggled to reach point-scoring positions and finished in 12th place. He described the race as challenging, attributing compromised strategy and lack of clean air to his performance.

“We were also lacking the necessary straight-line speed. However, I managed to execute some successful overtakes at Turn 6, which added excitement to the race. Our intention was to catch Yuki Tsunoda for the tenth position, but unfortunately, the soft tires lost grip towards the end of the race, resulting in the disappointment of not finishing in the points.

“We will take these lessons with us as we head to China in a few weeks,” concluded the 25-year-old Canadian.

Summarizing Aston Martin’s performance in the Japanese Grand Prix, team boss Mike Krack stated: “Securing sixth place was the best result we could achieve today, and it is commendable. The updates we introduced seem to be a positive step, as we managed to finish ahead of our closest competitor, Mercedes, and earn eight points. Fernando drove exceptionally well, and our team executed perfectly and consistently during the pit stops,” he explained.

Regarding Stroll’s performance, Krack commented: “Lance found himself in a battle with Tsunoda, who had a six-position advantage on the starting grid after qualifying. He fought bravely and executed impressive overtakes at the Esses. Unfortunately, we couldn’t challenge him today.

“Now we have a short break on Campus, and we eagerly await our return to Shanghai for the first Sprint weekend of the season,” concluded the Aston Martin boss.

Aston Martin currently holds fifth place in the 2024 F1 Constructors’ Championship, trailing Mercedes by just one point. This raises the question of what could have been if Stroll had scored some points in Japan.
