Dakar Rally 2026: A New Era of Challenge Awaits Competitors in Saudi Arabia!
As the countdown begins, motorsport enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement for the 47th edition of the Dakar Rally, set to kick off on January 3, 2026. This year, the world’s most grueling cross-country rally returns to its exclusive Saudi Arabian backdrop, marking its seventh consecutive year in the Kingdom after making the controversial move from South America.
Prepare for a thrilling ride as organizers ASO unveil a dramatically revamped route that promises to test the limits of stamina and strategy. This year’s Dakar Rally will unfold across 13 intense stages, complemented by the traditional Prologue that will establish the all-important starting order for the initial day of competition. Competitors will enjoy a well-deserved rest day in the bustling capital of Riyadh, allowing teams to recuperate before diving into the high-stakes second week.
In total, participants in the cars category will traverse a staggering 7,994 kilometers over the course of two weeks. Out of this, a monumental 4,880 kilometers will be contested in fiercely competitive special stages, ensuring that the 2026 edition stands out as one of the longest and most demanding in Dakar history. With nearly 5,000 kilometers of timed racing, this year’s event is shaping up to be a true test of endurance and skill.
A significant shake-up has occurred in the rally format, as the much-maligned 48-hour chrono stage has been scrapped. This decision comes on the heels of a crash-ridden 2025 event that saw many top contenders eliminated during the early brutal stages. “We had a small problem last year, particularly with the cars and motorcycles,” revealed Dakar director David Castera. “The 48-hour stage doesn’t really help in that regard, so it has been scrapped. We’ll explore other options in the future.”
In its place, the classic two-day marathon format makes a comeback, adding another layer of complexity for competitors. This thrilling revival will enforce a strict no-assistance rule for participants at the overnight bivouac, intensifying the challenge. The first marathon will take place over stages 4 and 5, winding through the stunning landscapes of Al Ula and Hail, while the second marathon will occur during stages 9 and 10, as competitors navigate the rugged terrain of Wadi Ad Dawasir and Bisha.
Notably, this year’s route will avoid the treacherous Empty Quarters desert, but don’t think for a second that the challenges will dwindle. The second week is set to unleash a barrage of sand dunes, particularly as drivers and riders tackle the punishing expanses around Wadi Ad Dawasir. “The difficulty is different from last year or the year before because the number of kilometers is crucial,” Castera noted. “We have almost 5,000 kilometers of timed stages, and that’s a lot. It’s been a long time since we’ve had this many kilometers. I believe this is one of the longest Dakars ever.”
