In a rather discreet manner, the Peugeot 508 SW has, during the year that is about to end, ceased to be part of the offering from the French brand of the Stellantis group. However, it seems that the lion brand is considering the possibility of developing a model to succeed this station wagon, which, in its two generations since 2010, has secured thousands of sales for the manufacturer from Sochaux.
Peugeot’s ambition is to have an alternative in its range to SUVs, which already account for more than 50% of new car sales in Europe. Alain Favey confirmed this in an interview with the British publication Autocar: “All brands, including ours, produce very good SUVs, and there are more on the way to the market, in all formats and types, but I think we need something different for the future. We are thinking about that, yes”, stated the CEO of Peugeot, who also admitted the possibility that the answer to the problem lies in the past…
Peugeot has stopped producing the 508 SW due to reduced demand, but the space in the lineup created by the elimination of the model presents an opportunity. However, the strongman of the brand does not confirm the replacement of station wagon for station wagon, as this format has lost many fans, almost all to SUVs, and this market is currently very small. “If that were not the case, we would still be in the category,” assured Alain Favey.
Still, even with the dominance of SUVs, there are new station wagons in the market, from the more conventional ones, like the BYD Seal 6 Touring, to those derived from the trendy format, like the Toyota bZ4X Touring. Cars that the same interlocutor identifies as potential rivals to the successor of the 508 SW, should the decision be made to produce such a model.
