2025 F1 rookies exposed: triumphs and disasters in a brutal debut season

Rookie Rollercoaster: The Trials and Tribulations of F1’s 2025 Debutantes

The 2024 Formula 1 season was a yawner with no new contenders, but the 2025 grid brought a fresh wave of adrenaline. Seven ambitious rookies stepped into the spotlight, armed with dreams and a fierce desire to make their mark in the unforgiving arena of motorsport. However, the reality proved to be a harrowing mix of glory and disaster, leaving many to wonder if they were truly ready for the relentless pressure of F1.

As the 2024 season concluded with the same driver line-ups, it became glaringly obvious that change was desperately needed. The stagnant situation within the teams was palpable, with team principals gripped by fear, unwilling to gamble on fresh talent despite the underwhelming performances of established drivers. The stage was set for a dramatic shake-up in 2025, as expiring contracts opened the floodgates for new talent.

What followed was a gripping saga of triumphs and failures that defined the rookie experience of 2025. Some drivers shone under pressure, while others crumbled, revealing the harsh realities of the sport. Let’s dive into the tumultuous journeys of these newcomers:

Jack Doohan: A Starlet’s Fall from Grace – 1/10 Australian driver Jack Doohan faced an uphill battle from the moment he signed his six-race probation contract. Thrust into the limelight, he struggled to match his seasoned teammate Pierre Gasly, quickly becoming an afterthought in the media frenzy. His debut race ended in catastrophe, marked by a crash that epitomized his inexperience. The criticism only intensified after a disastrous spin at Suzuka, leading to a medical center visit. The question loomed: Was Doohan truly ready for F1? Ultimately, his time in the sport was tragically brief, leaving fans to wonder what might have been.

Franco Colapinto: Crashes and Conundrums – 2.5/10 Colapinto’s stint with Alpine began with a spectacular crash before he even hit the track. The Argentine driver was thrown into a car that was widely considered the worst on the grid, and his season spiraled from there. With a staggering number of crashes and an inability to escape Q1, he became a cautionary tale of what happens when talent meets misfortune. Despite glimpses of potential in the latter half of the season, his dismal performance raised serious questions about his future, leaving him teetering on the brink of disaster.

Liam Lawson: From the Ashes to Respectability – 5/10 Lawson’s season was marked by a disheartening start, crashing out of Red Bull’s prestigious lineup. However, this setback ignited a fire within him. As he clawed back respectability, he ended up with 38 points, securing a spot above his peers in the rankings. Yet, the shadow of impending competition loomed large as Red Bull evaluated his performance. Lawson’s future remains uncertain, riding the razor’s edge of survival in a cutthroat environment.

Gabriel Bortoleto: A Bright Star Amidst Darkness – 6/10 Emerging from a stellar F2 season, Bortoleto faced the harsh realities of F1 with Sauber. Despite driving a lackluster machine, he showcased his potential by frequently qualifying well and scoring points. However, rookie mistakes marred his progress, demonstrating that the path to greatness is riddled with pitfalls. As he prepares for a new challenge with Audi in 2026, the question remains: Can he handle the pressure, or will he buckle under the weight of expectations?

Kimi Antonelli: The Rising Phoenix – 6/10 Antonelli’s first season in F1 began with promise, featuring early successes and a stunning pole position. However, his trajectory soon took a nosedive, marred by inconsistent performances and clashes with seasoned drivers. Yet, his resilience shone through, showcasing a mental toughness that might just make him a formidable contender in the future. As he navigates the complexities of F1, his ability to bounce back will be crucial for his longevity in the sport.

Oliver Bearman: The Fast but Flawed – 7.5/10 Speed is Bearman’s calling card, but consistency has been his Achilles’ heel. After a commendable performance in 2024, his rookie season saw him struggle with race management and critical errors during pivotal moments. However, flashes of brilliance, including an impressive fourth place in Mexico City, hinted at his vast potential. As Bearman looks towards 2026, he must hone his skills to avoid being viewed as a risk by Ferrari.

Isack Hadjar: The Standout Rookie of 2025 – 7.5/10 Hadjar’s journey from a disastrous formation lap crash to securing a coveted seat at Red Bull is nothing short of remarkable. His consistent performances and ability to compete with the best helped him earn acclaim within the paddock. While emotional outbursts have been a weakness, his determination and skill make him a promising asset for 2026. The pressure will be on as he aims to solidify his place among F1’s elite.

The 2025 season painted a vivid picture of the highs and lows faced by Formula 1’s newest talents. With contracts on the line and fierce competition looming, each driver must confront their demons, adapt, and evolve. As the dust settles, the question remains: who will rise to the occasion, and who will falter in the unforgiving world of Formula 1?
