Ferrari F1 boss defends Lewis Hamilton: is frustration the key to his comeback?

Ferrari F1 Team Chief Fred Vasseur Throws Down the Gauntlet: ‘I Hope Lewis Hamilton Is Furious!’

In a stunning display of candidness, Ferrari’s F1 boss Fred Vasseur has boldly declared that he actually welcomes Lewis Hamilton’s apparent frustration during his inaugural year with the legendary team. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, has repeatedly appeared despondent in front of the media, especially during the high-stakes finale of the season in Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, where he faced an unprecedented string of early exits from qualifying.

The British racing icon made history for all the wrong reasons this season, becoming the first full-time Ferrari driver to be eliminated in Q1 across three consecutive races. This dismal performance has led to some utterly bleak media interactions, showcasing a Hamilton that many fans have never seen before—visibly upset and delivering near-monotonous responses that reflect his discontent.

However, Vasseur sees a silver lining in this cloud of disappointment. He argues that Hamilton’s emotional responses signal a deep commitment to the sport and his team, stating, “When you are out in Q1, I hope the driver is mega upset with himself and with the team.” This unapologetic take could shake the foundations of what fans expect from drivers during low points in their careers, as Vasseur suggests that a lack of passion in these moments would be far more concerning.

Vasseur further emphasized the importance of Hamilton’s collaboration with the team, defending his driver against critics who might dismiss the driver’s emotional state as mere theatrics. “I respect perfectly the position of the drivers when they have this attitude,” he stated emphatically. He believes that it’s far more beneficial for Hamilton to engage earnestly with his engineers in the debriefing sessions than to trot out the usual “everything is fine” platitudes in front of cameras. “It’s much better to have someone not speaking in the TV pen and coming back to the debriefing, speaking with the engineers, trying to find solutions,” Vasseur explained.

This raw honesty from Vasseur challenges the status quo of F1 media interactions. He provocatively questioned whether journalists would prefer bland, rehearsed responses over genuine, heartfelt reactions from drivers who are feeling the weight of their performances. “I’m not sure that you, journalist, you prefer to have someone going to the TV pen saying, ‘no, everything is normal, blah, blah, blah’ – all the usual b**t,” he remarked.

As the F1 world watches with bated breath, Hamilton’s relationship with Ferrari remains under scrutiny. Vasseur’s comments not only shed light on the internal dynamics of the team but also raise the stakes for the upcoming season. Will Hamilton’s frustration fuel him to rise from the ashes, or will it serve as a barrier to his performance? One thing is clear: the drama surrounding this iconic driver and his new team is far from over. Buckle up, F1 fans, because the ride is just getting started!
