Formula E aims for electrifying future: Zandvoort set to secure long-term racing deal

Formula E Sets Its Sights on Zandvoort: A Long-Term Vision for Electrifying Racing

In a bold move that could reshape the future of motorsport in the Netherlands, Formula E is eyeing Zandvoort as a potential long-term venue for its groundbreaking all-electric series. CEO Jeff Dodds has made it clear in a recent interview that the championship is not just interested in a fleeting one-off event, but rather a robust, enduring partnership that would see Zandvoort become a permanent fixture on the racing calendar starting in 2027—the inaugural season of Gen4.

With Formula 1 set to depart the iconic Dutch circuit after the 2026 Grand Prix, Zandvoort finds itself at a pivotal crossroads. Enter Formula E, eager to fill the void left by F1 and revitalize the venue with a series that aligns perfectly with the growing global emphasis on sustainability and electric mobility. The talks between the two parties have been intensifying over recent months, and Dodds’ enthusiasm for the circuit is palpable.

Having attended this year’s Dutch Grand Prix as a fan, Dodds took the opportunity to mingle with Zandvoort’s ownership group, which includes Prince Bernhard van Orange-Nassau and investor Menno de Jong. “I love that circuit,” Dodds remarked, emphasizing its unique charm and potential. “In honesty, it is a bit small for F1, but could be perfect for Gen4—not just the circuit, but the infrastructure as well.”

The strategic appeal of Zandvoort cannot be overstated. Located a mere 30–40 minutes from Schiphol Airport, the circuit is ideally positioned to attract both local and international fans. Dodds noted the immense passion for motorsport in the Netherlands, spurred on by homegrown heroes like Max Verstappen and Nyck de Vries, who is poised to contend for championships.

Dodds expressed his admiration for the Zandvoort team, stating, “I really, really, really like Bernhard and the team—Menno, they’re lovely people to talk to, and they love what we do.” The camaraderie and shared vision between Formula E and Zandvoort’s management are evident, with Dodds confirming, “We’re having lots of good conversations with them.”

While there is no official announcement yet, the groundwork is being laid for what could become a thrilling new chapter in Zandvoort’s racing history. “From a Formula E point of view, we would see it as not just for a year. We would see it as a proper potential long-term place for us to race, because I think it’s a brilliant location,” Dodds concluded.

As the electric racing revolution gathers momentum, Zandvoort appears poised to play a crucial role, potentially transforming its legacy and embracing a new era of motorsport that resonates with fans and environmental advocates alike. The future looks bright for Formula E and Zandvoort, and the motorsport world is watching closely.
