Ferrari faces pivotal moment as Charles Leclerc declares 2026 ‘now or never’ for success

Ferrari’s 2025 F1 season was nothing short of a catastrophic failure, leaving fans and drivers alike in disbelief as the iconic team ended the year without a single grand prix victory. The pressure is mounting as they prepare for the 2026 championship, and recently, team principal Fred Vasseur addressed the fiery remarks made by Charles Leclerc, who dramatically declared it was “now or never” for the Scuderia.

In the aftermath of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Leclerc’s emotional outburst revealed the deep frustration simmering within the team. After a season riddled with disappointments and the glaring absence of podium finishes from highly-touted newcomer Lewis Hamilton, the stakes have never been higher for Ferrari. Vasseur, however, urged calm, suggesting that Leclerc’s comments were made in the heat of the moment, reflecting the high emotions that come with racing.

“Honestly, I think Charles, if you ever looked last year for sure, when you are going to the TV pen and you’re asking him after the session, are you happy with the session when it’s P2 or are you happy when it’s P6? It’s not the same Charles, for sure,” Vasseur stated, pointing out that the Monegasque driver’s perspective can shift drastically based on race outcomes. “But if you ask him the day after, ‘what do you want to do with the team?’, I think the approach is always the same. It’s always constructive, to try to do better.”

Despite a title drought that stretches back to 2008, Leclerc’s urgency is palpable as he enters his eighth season with Ferrari. Vasseur acknowledged the weight of Leclerc’s words, emphasizing that they stem from a desire to push the team forward and overcome the obstacles they face. “It doesn’t matter if you are P1 or P10. I think the debrief today at Alpine, Williams, at Red Bull, with us is the same,” he mentioned, underlining the universal quest for improvement that every team shares.

Vasseur further reinforced that their strategy will remain consistent across all performance aspects, whether it be engine development, gearbox optimization, aerodynamic enhancements, or simulation work. “This is the DNA of what we are doing,” he asserted, showcasing a commitment to relentless improvement.

The challenge to reclaim their former glory is compounded by the fierce competition within the sport. Champions like Max Verstappen and rising stars such as Lando Norris are setting the bar high, pushing their teams to the absolute limit. Vasseur is keenly aware that Ferrari must match this intensity to remain relevant in the cutthroat world of Formula 1.

As the team looks ahead to the 2026 season, the pressure to perform is palpable. Will Ferrari answer the call, or will they falter once again? The world watches with bated breath, eager to see if the Scuderia can rise from the ashes of a dismal past and reclaim its rightful place at the pinnacle of motorsport.
