Max Verstappen’s shocking medical ban from flying: flu keeps F1 champion from gala celebration

Max Verstappen, the unstoppable force of Formula 1, has been sidelined by illness, leaving fans and fellow racers in shock. The reigning world champion was notably absent from the prestigious FIA prize-giving gala held in Uzbekistan, a highlight of the motorsport calendar, where he was set to receive accolades for his fierce prowess on the track. Instead, he delivered a heartfelt video message explaining his unfortunate situation, which was caused by a bout of flu that has kept him grounded and unable to fly.

In a candid message, Verstappen expressed his disappointment at missing the celebration where Lando Norris was celebrated for clinching the drivers’ championship trophy. “Hi everyone, Max here, I’m very sorry that I couldn’t be with you guys tonight,” he stated, revealing that doctors had explicitly advised against flying due to his health condition. He continued to commend his fellow competitors, particularly praising McLaren and Norris for their phenomenal season, stating, “You guys had an unbelievable season and it was really cool to be able to race against you guys until the end.”

Despite his absence, Verstappen’s influence was still felt at the gala, where his remarkable overtake of Oscar Piastri during the Imola Grand Prix earned him the coveted ‘Action of the Year’ award. This thrilling maneuver, executed flawlessly around the outside of turn three, solidified his reputation as one of the most daring drivers on the circuit.

The night was also a celebration of other great achievements within the FIA family. F3 champion Rafael Camara was awarded the prestigious FIA Rookie of the Year for his record-breaking season, while Ferrari’s endurance team basked in the glory of their first World Endurance Championship titles since 1972. Leonardo Fornaroli, the F2 champion, also took center stage to claim his trophy, marking a night of triumphs across the motorsport spectrum.

In a significant political note, the event was underscored by the re-election of Mohammed Ben Sulayem as FIA president, ensuring a thrilling four years ahead for the organization. His leadership continues to shape the future of motorsport amidst its ever-evolving landscape.

As fans eagerly await Verstappen’s return to the track, his absence at such a pivotal event has reignited discussions about the physical demands of the sport and the importance of health, even for the most dominant athletes. With his sights set on recovery, Verstappen’s next moves will be watched with keen anticipation as he aims to reclaim his throne in the high-octane world of Formula 1 racing.
