Nyck de Vries admits fault in shocking Formula E crash: how a misjudgment ruined the race

Nyck de Vries: A Shocking Miscalculation Sparks Chaos at São Paulo E-Prix!

In a stunning turn of events at the season-opening São Paulo E-Prix, Mahindra Racing’s Nyck de Vries has taken full responsibility for a catastrophic clash with his teammate, Edoardo Mortara, during the very first lap of the race. What began as a promising start for the duo quickly spiraled into a disaster that left fans and analysts alike reeling.

De Vries, who launched from a commendable fifth position, found himself directly behind Mortara, who had secured an impressive third on the grid. The Mahindra team entered the race with high hopes after showcasing remarkable performance in practice and qualifying. However, as the race began, it all unraveled in a split second. De Vries admitted to a critical “misjudgment” of his braking point as the cars thundered into the first corner, leading to a devastating collision with Mortara and Cupra Kiro’s Dan Ticktum.

The repercussions of this mishap were immediate and severe, as Ticktum suffered a puncture that derailed his race. Mortara, though fortunate to escape with minimal damage, was not spared from a five-second time penalty due to having re-entered the circuit improperly after the incident—a harsh consequence of de Vries’s error. Mortara’s day only worsened as he later crashed into a wall after being forced off by Lola’s Lucas di Grassi.

Meanwhile, de Vries faced his own set of challenges, needing to pit mid-race for a puncture. Nevertheless, he managed to salvage a ninth-place finish, aided by a late red flag that interrupted the race. In a candid post-race interview with RacingNews365, the Dutch driver expressed his profound disappointment, stating, “I misjudged my braking point.”

When pressed about the frustration of missing out on a potential points haul, de Vries lamented, “Well, obviously it’s always disappointing to go backwards and to kind of lose out on an opportunity. So yeah, of course, I’m disappointed and frustrated by that. I just misjudged that, and that was on me.”

This chaotic start to the Formula E season raises serious questions about the team’s strategy and communication on the track. With both drivers clearly capable of strong performances, fans are left wondering what might have been had this costly error not occurred. As the dust settles on this dramatic opening race, all eyes will be on de Vries and Mortara as they look to redeem themselves in the upcoming rounds. Will they bounce back from this setback, or will the shadows of São Paulo haunt them for the rest of the season? Only time will tell!
