BMW has unveiled the latest generation of the X2, the model that first introduced the Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) vehicle concept to the premium compact segment, and which is now bigger than ever, with coupé styling and an unprecedented 100% electric variant.
The new BMW X2 has a distinctive design that shows a clear differentiation from the previous generation with dimensions that have increased significantly as it is 4.55 meters long, 194 mm more than the previous version, 1.84 wide, 21 mm more and 1.59 high, 64 mm more than its predecessor. In addition, the longer wheelbase, 2.69 m, benefits the space for rear seat passengers as well as the luggage compartment. Thus, the new X2 has a maximum load capacity of 560 to 1470 liters, depending on the version, while the 100% electric variant, iX2, offers a capacity of between 525 and 1400 liters.
BMW has bet heavily on the aesthetics of the new X2, which features the slimmer lines typical of the SUV coupé format, but also on the wider grille, which as an option can have a lighted surround, and which in the case of the iX2 is completely closed to improve aerodynamic performance.
In addition, there is a new LED light signature; while in profile, the highlight is the way BMW designers have integrated the door handles, which do not interfere with the fluidity of the bodywork, which is more muscular. The rear is marked by LED headlights that extend to the trunk lid.
Inside, the highlight is the BMW Curved Display, which combines two screens: one with 10.25” for the instrument panel and the other with 10.7” for the infotainment system. One of its functions is called QuickSelect, allowing you to access certain functions more directly without having to run through different submenus.
The new seats offer optional vegan finishes. As standard, the new X2 offers dual-zone automatic climate control, BMW Maps navigation system, a perforated leather sports steering wheel, as well as an electric tailgate, four USB-C ports and two 12V sockets, one in the center console and one in the luggage compartment.
In terms of engines, the second-generation X2 initially offers two petrol options, the rear-wheel drive sDrive20i, which makes use of a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder that is linked to a 48V mild-hybrid system and delivers 170 hp.
The M35i xDrive with all-wheel drive, on the other hand, uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 300 hp and allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds. The diesel variant, the X2 sDrive18d, makes use of a new four-cylinder that offers a maximum power of 150 hp and promises consumption of 5.1 to 5.5 l/100 km.
In addition to the thermal versions, the highlight is the unprecedented 100% electric iX2 version equipped with two electric motors, one per axle, with all-wheel drive, offering 313 hp of power and a maximum torque of 494 Nm, figures that allow it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6s and reach a top speed of 180 km/h.
The two electric motors are powered by a battery with a capacity of 64.8 kWh, which allows BMW to announce a range of between 417 and 449 km in the WLTP cycle, and charging power of up to 130 kW.
BMW has revealed that the new X2 and iX2 will hit the market in March 2024, while a second electric version and a new variant with a diesel engine should be presented in the summer of next year.
