Toto Wolff issues dramatic apology to Red Bull after shocking Abu Dhabi pit lane collision

Toto Wolff’s Stunning Apology: Chaos Erupts in Abu Dhabi Pit Lane After Tsunoda-Antonelli Collision!

In a shocking turn of events at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has publicly apologized to Red Bull Racing following a dramatic incident involving drivers Kimi Antonelli and Yuki Tsunoda. This collision, which unfolded in the pit lane during the final free practice session, led to an official investigation by FIA stewards and a hefty €10,000 fine imposed on Mercedes.

The chaos began when Antonelli was released from the pit box straight into the path of Tsunoda’s Red Bull, resulting in a violent clash that sent a shower of carbon fiber flying across the pit lane. Tsunoda, in a moment of alarm, reported over team radio, “I had a massive crash,” indicating the severity of the situation. When questioned about potential damage to his car, Tsunoda lamented, “I think so, but he has the damage so… On the side of the sidepod.”

The aftermath saw Tsunoda forced to revert to an older floor for qualifying, a decision stemming from the mishap, while Antonelli challenged Mercedes’ pit release strategy, exclaiming, “you told me ‘yes’ and it was… Tsunoda was coming.” The FIA’s swift investigation deemed the release unsafe, and the €10,000 penalty was a direct consequence of the team’s blunder.

The stewards’ report elaborated, “The competitor of Car 12 conceded that the team was in a ‘bit of a rush’ due to the prior red flag and also noted that there was no fault that could be attributed to the driver, as he was following the instructions of the team.” This ruling aligns with penalties handed down for similar infractions, notably during this year’s Singapore Grand Prix.

In an exclusive statement to Sky F1, Wolff expressed his remorse, saying, “First of all, I’m sorry for Yuki, because I think we damaged all of the good bits of his car. It was our mistake. We need to identify what happened.” He added a note of optimism, stating, “The session was grim at the beginning, but then I think George [Russell] had a proper lap and that was good enough for P1. And with Kimi after the shunt in the pit lane, it was all messy, obviously. It’s going to be okay.”

This incident marks a pivotal moment for Tsunoda, as it is confirmed that this weekend will be his final race in Formula 1 for now, with him set to transition to a test and reserve role for Red Bull in the upcoming year.

As fans eagerly await the next developments, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend takes a turn marked by tension and unexpected drama, proving once again that in Formula 1, anything can happen!
