Michael Masi’s dramatic downfall: from Abu Dhabi scandal to Supercars exile and unexpected return

Michael Masi: From the Infamous Abu Dhabi Showdown to the Supercars Commission’s New Dawn

The mere mention of Michael Masi ignites a firestorm of emotions among motorsport fans worldwide. While some crack a smile at the memory, others unleash a torrent of expletives, especially when recalling the controversial climax of the 2021 Formula 1 season in Abu Dhabi. That race is etched in history not just for its thrilling finish but for the uproar that followed, leading to Masi’s dramatic fall from grace.

In July 2022, the former Formula 1 race director officially parted ways with the FIA, but not without a storm of controversy. Masi’s tenure ended after he made a critical misstep during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where he incorrectly executed the safety car restart protocol, enabling Max Verstappen to snatch victory from Lewis Hamilton in a nail-biting finale. This blunder, as per an FIA investigation, was deemed an “error of human judgment” made in “good faith” but nonetheless cost him his job in February 2022.

The FIA’s decision to remove him was softened with claims of Masi’s desire to relocate closer to family and take on new challenges—an elegant euphemism for what many see as his ‘banishment’ from the pinnacle of motorsport governance.

A Triumphant Return to the Track: Leading the Supercars Commission

Despite the fallout, Masi has not remained absent from the racing world. In 2022, he re-entered the motorsport arena as the independent chairman of the Supercars Commission, the body overseeing Australia’s Touring Car Championship. Effective from August of that year, Masi has been instrumental in shaping the future of Australian motorsport.

In November 2023, he was formally appointed to this pivotal role, succeeding Neil Crompton. His current focus includes the integration of groundbreaking GEN3 prototypes, such as the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang, into the championship. Prior to his F1 role, Masi served as the vice-race director for Supercars from 2016 to 2019, showcasing his deep-rooted commitment to the sport, albeit now on a different stage.

Speculations and Future Prospects: Could Masi Make a Comeback?

As the motorsport world continues to evolve, whispers of Masi’s potential return to the FIA have surfaced, particularly following comments from FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, hinting at a welcoming attitude towards Masi’s reintegration. However, as of now, he remains distanced from any race director responsibilities, concentrating instead on his current role within Supercars and his personal life in Australia.

The current race director for Formula 1 is Rui Marques, who took the reins after Eduardo Freitas’s departure following Masi’s controversial exit. The motorsport community watches with bated breath: will Michael Masi be able to reclaim his former glory, or will he continue to navigate the intricate world of racing from the sidelines?

In the high-stakes game of motorsport, where every decision can alter the course of history, Michael Masi’s story is far from over. As he champions the future of Australian racing, only time will tell if redemption awaits him on the international stage once again.
