Lando Norris faces chilling curse in final race: history suggests leader never wins title

Title: The Curse of the Leader: Lando Norris Faces a Haunting Legacy in Formula 1’s Final Showdown

As the thrilling 2025 Formula 1 season approaches its nail-biting climax, a chilling historical pattern looms large over Lando Norris, the current championship leader. With the stakes higher than ever, Norris finds himself in an eerily familiar situation that has haunted the top contenders of the sport for decades. Can he defy the odds, or will he fall victim to the infamous “curse of the leader”?

The shadows of the past are long and dark, stretching back to pivotal years like 1981, 1983, 1986, 2007, and 2010—each marked by dramatic showdowns where three or more drivers entered the final race with a chance to claim the coveted championship title. In every one of these scenarios, history has repeated itself in a cruel twist: the driver leading the pack at the finale always walked away empty-handed, a haunting fate that could spell disaster for Norris.

A Legacy of Heartbreak

In 1981 and 1983, the legendary Nelson Piquet—now the father-in-law of reigning champion Max Verstappen—turned the tables when he entered the final races trailing in points. In both instances, Piquet capitalized on the misfortunes of others to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, leaving frontrunners Carlos Reutemann and Alain Prost to rue their missed opportunities. Their championship dreams crumbled as Piquet triumphed without even winning the race, proving that in Formula 1, sometimes luck is the ultimate decider.

Fast forward to 1986, when Nigel Mansell, the pride of England, led the standings only to suffer a gut-wrenching tire explosion that shattered his title hopes. The McLaren ace Alain Prost seized the moment and secured his championship, leaving Mansell and the Williams team in disbelief. The agony of near victory is a bitter pill that has plagued leaders throughout F1 history.

A Tense Standoff in 2007

The drama escalated in 2007, a season fraught with tension and controversy. Three titans—Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and Kimi Raikkonen—battled fiercely for the crown. Hamilton, the rookie sensation, entered the final race in Brazil with a slender four-point lead over teammate Alonso. However, a series of blunders and technical issues saw him slip from grace, while Raikkonen capitalized on the chaos to snatch the title, marking yet another instance where the leader faltered when it mattered most.

The 2010 Catastrophe

The nail in the coffin came in 2010 when four drivers, including Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber, faced off in a dramatic finale at Abu Dhabi. Alonso, who had an eight-point lead over Webber, seemed poised for victory until a shocking turnaround allowed Sebastian Vettel—who started the race third—to claim the championship. This unforgettable finale reinforced the notion that being in the lead means nothing when the final lap is on the line.

A Glimmer of Hope for Norris?

As this season unfolds, the specter of this historical curse hangs heavily over Norris’s head, compelling him to tread carefully as he navigates the final race of the season. However, there is a silver lining for his teammate, Oscar Piastri, who might take comfort in the age-old adage, “there’s no two without three,” as he eyes the chance for a miraculous turnaround.

In a humorous twist of fate, the last time a driver starting at the top of the championship standings actually clinched the title in a final showdown was in 1974, when Emerson Fittipaldi and Clay Regazzoni entered the last race tied in points. Remarkably, Fittipaldi, who had the edge with more race wins, triumphed while Regazzoni finished fourth. It’s a distant memory that adds to the tension of this year’s championship battle.

With history as a relentless guide, the question remains: Will Lando Norris break the curse that has plagued champions for decades, or will he join the ranks of the many who have fallen victim to the relentless pursuit of glory in Formula 1? Buckle up, as this season’s final act promises to be nothing short of electrifying!
