Oscar Piastri Channels “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” Mentality After Snatching Qatar GP Pole from Norris

Oscar Piastri pulled off a perfectly timed strike to steal Qatar Grand Prix pole position from Lando Norris, and afterward the Australian made it clear he wasn’t about to mess with a winning formula: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

The pole marks Piastri’s second of the weekend — after topping sprint qualifying and then winning the sprint race itself — setting up a high-stakes, all-McLaren showdown on the front row for Sunday’s 57-lap battle at Lusail.

Win or Bust for Piastri — While Norris Has Title Point in Sight

With 22 points between the two McLaren teammates, victory under the lights would be enough to hand Norris the world championship.
But Piastri isn’t blinking. After taking pole, the 24-year-old even broke out a Sebastian Vettel–style finger wag during the Pirelli award ceremony.

Asked how much he changed on the car between the sprint success and the grand prix qualifying session, Piastri didn’t hesitate:

“We left it pretty much the same. Very, very minor tweaks here and there, but no, everything felt great all weekend. So yeah, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Scrubbed Softs Surprise in Q2

The nine-time grand prix winner admitted he briefly questioned strategy when the typically less-favored scrubbed softs came alive during Q2.

“Had a little bit of a question mark on which tyres we wanted to use, because I did a quick lap on the used set in Q2, and those were a little bit of a spanner in the works, as we didn’t expect it to be so good. But Q3 was really good on the new tyres. So very happy.”

‘Pretty Much’ Win or Bust

With the championship fight entering its penultimate round, Piastri didn’t shy away from the stakes.

When asked whether Sunday’s race is win or bust, he simply answered:

“Pretty much.”

And he knows exactly what he needs to do:

“I’ll try my best, starting from the best spot. Try and do some more of what I did today in the sprint and see what we can do.”

Under the Lusail lights, McLaren’s intra-team duel is set — and Piastri is ready to throw everything at keeping the title alive.
